Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.
Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.
Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.
As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity......................

Good for you. Bravo!!! I saw a YT video a couple of days ago, it featured someone vaping and blowing the vape through a 3 layer cloth mask. Large clouds of vape pouring out of the mask. The intended point was that the virus is orders of magnitude smaller than the vaped particles. If the vape can escape the 3 layer mask so much more easily can the virus enter and escape as you breathe.

I signed and agree as an 81 year old male, a couple of weeks away from being 82.
My wife is 80 and our siblings and close friends fall into a narrow range of age, late 70’s to early 80’s.
We senior citizens are often on house arrest. We go pickup our groceries or have them delivered.
3 weeks ago, I had some same day surgery at our HMO surgery center 14 miles from our home. It was the first time we had been out of our hometown since 13 March and that was a same day procedure for my wife. My same day surgery was scheduled in late March, and I finally had it 3 weeks ago.
My wife and I finally found a good restaurant that was open for lunch on our 59th anniversary in September. That was the first meal we had eaten out at a restaurant since the crud panic hit.
What we are doing to our younger generations is terrible. K to College age relatives both last semester and this current one have been forced into mainly if not total online courses.
Only one of our families has children now attending live classes enrolled in a private school in classrooms.
Every other child from elementary to college seniors is in a total online or a large % of time online.
Cal State recently closed all of its classes and moved the students out of the dorms. Students can only attend classes online. That was Cal State’s second closure this year.
The college age group has one of the lowest serious CV19 infection rates along with minimal if any serious health problems brought on by their CV19 infections. Yet based on B$ data, their colleges often became online colleges.
Some of our adult children are in middle to upper management. It has become impossible for them to even do short range planning. Their plans are being implemented, and then:

Now our adult children/managers have to adapt to the new B$ rules of work, not based on science or reality. Sometimes, they learn about these rule changes when they return to their offices the next morning of work.

My wife is on our church’s prayer chain. Potentially suicidal teens and ??? age are on those lists.

Virus particles are 125 nm but the point of masks is to stop droplets not virus particles. The vaping demonstration is irrelevant.
So, let me get this straight, exhaled vapor from vaping which is significantly larger in diameter than a virus that flows freely from a mask is going to protect you from the much smaller virus?
Droplets of a significant size will be captured by a mask but, the only face covering that can prevent the dispersal of this virus is a Plastic Bag over your face.
If you can easily and comfortably BREATH with your mask it is completely worthless. The breath that escapes from your mask so you don’t suffocate is contaminated with the virus.
Furthermore, an infected person with a mask can contaminate your mask with their breath. If this happens you are now breathing through a contaminated mask. Over and over and over again. Thereby increasing your viral load. Familiar with viral load?
But the biggest problem with the masks are the gaps. As you said if you can comfortable breath though a cloth mask it is worthless. That doesn't apply to surgical masks. Those are not worthless and can be comfortably breathed through. I use those. But even with those, most air escapes around the edges.
The problem is not the masks which are better than nothing (you are wrong about your last claim). The problem is super spreaders for which masks don't really materr because their load is very high. Yes I am familiiar with load.
So, the overwhelming evidence that masks are worthless in a viral outbreak means nothing to you. There have been studies done (all prior to the political virus that is the Wuhan Virus) that demonstrated, again and again, the worthlessness of masks with viruses.
Furthermore, N95 masks are NOT meant for use in combatting the spread of viruses. The N95 mask was developed to MINIMIZE the spread of BACTERIAL Infections in a hospital environment. Bacteria are much larger in diameter than any virus.
In fact, many Epidemiologists have described wearing a cloth mask to prevent the spread of a virus to a homeowner putting a dome over their property made of chainlink fencing to keep mosquitoes out.
The N-95 are used in hospitals to protect the staff. They have valves so they don't protect the anyone from wearer if the wearer is infected and in fact can make the spread from the wearer worse. In addition they put surgical masks over them so they don't have to switch N-95 masks as often and provide a bit of protection from the valve on the N-95 if the wearer is infected. In addition they put surgical masks on most patients to reduce droplets.
So we are left with cloth masks which are mostly worthless (although the chain link fence analogy is inapplicable since we are talking droplets), surgical masks with gaps, and properly fitted N-95. I go with the one in the middle since i have a supply for free. I am not allowed to wear N-95 at work because the valve will make spread worse if I am infected. The surgical mask will stop most of my droplets. They may stop some incoming droplets They won't stop aerosolized virus from me or from a super spreader.
I have looked at and linked plenty of studies on my about page. I read everything, pro or con. I don't cherry pick. I don't watch any "experts" on youtube, I only read the actual medical studies. The bottom line of the studies is masks vary from fairly effective, to better than nothing, to worse than nothing depending on the masks, the habits of the wearer, and the threat. I do the best I can. But I also will respond to any claims of "orders of magnitude" that are just plain wrong.
