From what I understand, CNN’s tie to the story is innocuous. The DC media corps rotate among the major news outlets when it comes to hosting press conferences, and CNN will be the one hosting this event.

In the old days you’d see a press conference with someone speaking into a ridiculous looking bank of a dozen or more microphones — with each TV and radio news outlet having their own feed. Now, they have. Single microphone provided by one news outlet ... and all the others are given access to the same audio/video feed.
