President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has told his administrations negotiators to end coronavirus stimulus talks with Democrats until after the Nov. 3 election.
The declaration, if the White House follows through on it, would halt an ongoing push to send trillions of dollars more in relief to Americans as the outbreak rampages through the U.S. and the economy struggles to recover from virus-related shutdowns. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke for an hour about a relief package on Monday and planned to talkagain Tuesday.
I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business, Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
The president added that he has asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to focus full time on confirming Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
Investors punished stocks in response to Trumps tweets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 300 points, about 1.1%, in the minutes following the announcement.

Well it’s mostly the blue states have insisted on economy crushing lockdown diktats. Most red states are opening up rapidly. New York State currently has the highest unemployment rate in the country, up to twice that in some red states, mostly because DeBlasio and Cuomo insist on stifling their economies till after November.

Nancy Pelosi is asking for $2.4 Trillion Dollars to bailout poorly run, high crime, Democrat States, money that is in no way related to COVID-19. We made a very generous offer of $1.6 Trillion Dollars and, as usual, she is not negotiating in good faith. I am rejecting their...

Pelosi is stuck with the middle finger. The end results she is left holding her thing. She comes back with squat. Donald walks! Wanta bet she will be back.
The CNBC headlines do not mention this part of the tweet. You have to find out for yourself what Trump actually said. This is very dishonest. Expected better from CNBC

Of course the media’s dishonest... which is why we know we need to go to the source to find out what POTUS actually said ... and to see the strategy in it.
It’s also why I’ve posted the President’s tweet in full about a zillion times. LOL! :)
Trump walked away today. He did not say for how long. Who knows? The deal could be made tomorrow.
I only know that time after time for 4 years he has made seemingly inexplicable moves like this that we fear will lose his support. Nearly every time things ‘magically’ fall in place shortly thereafter.
Nailed it, rabbit.
Oh never mind- of course he said for how long. Till after the election. Still... just give it a minute.
Boom went the stock market
It blowed Down
Taxman Bravo Zulu, Mr. President!
I think it’s a bad idea. Should have one more negotiation, then leave it on the table, explaining why. A lot of poor people, old people, laid off workers, etc. are looking forward to another $1200.
Headlines are very bad press as far as they are concerned. And BTW, they are Trump voters.
Agree .. Pelosi will make one more try to the $2.4 trillion.
Then she can clear out the Speaker’s office.
I live in a blue state and I don’t want to work, in fact I never have wanted to work! Do I really have to vote for Biden?
