President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has told his administrations negotiators to end coronavirus stimulus talks with Democrats until after the Nov. 3 election.
The declaration, if the White House follows through on it, would halt an ongoing push to send trillions of dollars more in relief to Americans as the outbreak rampages through the U.S. and the economy struggles to recover from virus-related shutdowns. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke for an hour about a relief package on Monday and planned to talkagain Tuesday.
I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business, Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
The president added that he has asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to focus full time on confirming Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
Investors punished stocks in response to Trumps tweets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 300 points, about 1.1%, in the minutes following the announcement.

Wheels up, off to California after adjourning the House until after Election Day. Its a shameful display of partisanship in the wake of our recovery from the coronavirus. Rather than help small businesses continue to access unused funds from the Paycheck Protection Program, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is willing to block reasonable relief efforts, all in the name of politics. She doesnt want to risk President Trump and congressional Republicans getting an ounce of credit in the final weeks of this election.
Why is CNBC only showing part of Trumps tweet?
You have to go to their web page to see the entire tweet!
Yes, and Im sure that will be very convincing to all those who arent already determined to vote for him.
We can rightly say that the mainstream media doesnt have as much power as they used to have in shaping a narrative and pushing public opinion. But we are delusional to think they have no sway at all, especially with white suburban swing voters and with senior citizens who are accustomed to getting their news from the same sources they always have.

For later.
Great. My stocks collapsed. Again.
This hurt the dems far more than us.
People will be screaming about it.
She’ll still feel the heat, and have to come down or there will be no negotiations with her, ever, because the Dems will lose the House and he’ll be reelected.
yes! this is really great news. sorry some are suffering, no doubt about that, but the more we get off the gov tit the better.
Thats very true. President Trump has not ever and will not ever get a fair shake from the media.
But if the reports about Pelosi getting pressure from her own caucus are true (especially those 2018 House Dem freshmen who won in districts Trump won or narrowly lost in 2016), then how does this help? How does this not allow those Democrats to say (with some truth) that it was Trump who walked away from the negotiating table?
Make Pelosi walk away by insisting on a focused relief package free of unrelated garbage.
And the Democrats will say the reverse.
Happens to us all here and there, montag813.
Sometimes I feel like I am watching a ping pong match, and I completely lose track of up and down.
I got to that whole point with Syria where I couldn’t tell at all what the right path was. Trump chose the right one, because it didn’t turn into a black vortex and suck the universe in!
Personally, I think this is a big mistake by Trump. I understand Art of the Deal, and have always supported his negotiating skills. But 30 days out from the election, he has tanked the stock market, and this will all be on him. Should have just let them continue. He could have always veto’d whatever they came up with....
Hahahaha...thank you for that ping, SunkenCiv...much appreciated!
Best President EVAH!
Agreed, except that it would never come to a veto. If Munchin cant get Pelosi to pass something out of the House free of the garbage that would make it a no go in the Senate, then it never makes it to Trumps desk.
But to declare youre walking away less than a month before the election? I just dont see how this helps.
Nope. How long has this been going on? Its been like forever. Enough already.
