Sounds rather sensible. It’s probably more trouble than it’s worth on the U.S. side, and it’s precious metal on the Mexican side.

It’s probably worth the time for the scrappers on the Mexican side, but not for the contractors building the wall.

The big difference is that on the American side it costs a ton of money to recycle with all the regulations. On the Mexican side its worth a fortune to poor people.

The faux outrage runs deep with Marxists, because they would never stoop to pick up a penny, non the less clean up tons of scrap metal in the desert.

Cost to haul the scrap back into the US is probably prohibitive. Just more anti-Trump propaganda.

I've seen the old "wall", er "fence". Mexico can have it.

Hey, the debris fell on the Mexican side. It would be illegal for our people to cross the border to pick it up!

Smart move. Cheap way to get rid of the debris and you bud some goodwill.

Typical BS headline that does not really connect with the true facts and situation. So typical.

This doesn’t really bother me.

The wall is a national security project and it has a cost associated with it that we’ll have to pay if it’s a priority (and it should be). What the people building that wall do with the ineffective barriers they’re replacing isn’t really my concern. If it were particularly valuable and owned by the American people? Sure. But some scrap metal in the middle of the dessert? Better to move it out of there than to have it sitting around rusting out on the ground while doing nothing.

If the contractors building the wall can make a buck in the process, more power to them. This is America; you’re SUPPOSED to be able to make a buck!

What a fantastic and cheap way to get rid of the material. Bulldoze it into Mexico where the scrap dealers clean it up rather than paying BIG bucks to haul it to Phoenix or Tucson and probably paying a fee to dump it there.

Everybody wins. The poor Mexican scrap dealer AND the American taxpayer.

Why are their panties in a wad?

“All of that metal and concrete should have been carried away to Phoenix or Tucson where there’s legal disposal sites or recycling centers – none of it should have been pushed into Mexico,” Nabhan said.”

So grab yourself a shovel and a truck, Gary.

The Enviros & Dems have bitched for years about recycling...

Now, these contractors are doing such, and the bitching grows louder.

No doubt they (and we) are saving money by not having to transport the metal long distances to get 25 cents a pound or whatever.

Talk about a click-bait headline.

Since when did “old scrapped ineffective fencing” become “taxpayer-funded border wall”?

The real scandal would be if the contractors were selling the stuff at a profit and that profitable opportunity wasn’t built into the government contract. Clearly there’s no profitable opportunity or they wouldn’t be letting the Mexicans have it free.

In fact, it’s more likely that it would cost them more to dispose of it any other way, including taking it to a recycling center themselves.

I really don't see a problem with this, it benefits both. It would probably be more expensive for the contactor to pay the labor, fuel and equipment cost than they could possibly get from taking it to a US scrap yard.

I bet the author thought this would be some kind of gotcha moment they could slime on Trump when all it seems to be is good financial practices.

Hi. Hope you are doing well.

In the fwiw department, hauling concrete (esp) and scrap steel to Phoenix or Tucson is very expressive.

Just sayin
