It's Pennsylvania. They can't all be Rick Santorum, and Toomey was better than Specter, at least.Toomey ran as a firebreathing conservative that first time, and he won. So it's not that he needed to be a squishy moderate to be electable. He chose to be a squishy moderate. Basically he was and is just another GOP liar who says he is one thing to get elected then governs completely differently.

BlackElk (R.I.P.) had followed him even before the election and knew what he was about before he got in, warning me about him. I suspect that the Republican establishment in PA (the Tom Ridge types) knew that, and let him move forward without interference once Specter was gone.
