Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned the world Jerusalem belongs to Turkey, harking back to the Ottoman Empires control over the city for hundreds of years up until it was ejected in 1917.
Erdogan made his public claim Thursday as he addressed Turkish lawmakers during a major policy speech in Ankara. He said: "In this city that we had to leave in tears during the First World War, it is still possible to come across traces of the Ottoman resistance. So Jerusalem is our city, a city from us. Our first qibla [direction of prayer in Islam] al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem are the symbolic mosques of our faith. In addition, this city is home to the holy places of Christianity and Judaism."
As the Times of Israel reported, the Ottoman Empire ruled Jerusalem from 1516 to 1917. Modern Turkey, its successor state, has long claimed a connection to the holy city, regularly condemning Israel for alleged attemtps to Judaize it and the U.S. administrations December 2017 recognition of it as Israels capital.
Turkeys claim to ownership and an Islamic proprietary interest in the city defies thousands of years of accepted wisdom that confirms some of Judaisms holiest sites are located in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem.
These include the Temple Mount and Western Wall in Jerusalem; the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in Hebron; and Josephs Tomb in Nablus.
That did not stop Erdoğan during his lengthy speech to the Turkish parliament lamenting the fate of Jerusalem and Palestinians and reaffirming his embrace of Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, and is deemed a terrorist group by Israel, the E.U. and the U.S. ...

Why is Turkey still in the U.N.?
Ooops. Not U.N., but NATO.
Do not tell us, tell God.
bttt
Why is Turkey still in NATO?
Putin can invade Turkey anytime he wants, as far as I’m concerned.
Erdogan longs for the days of the Ottoman Empire. But it's not coming back. And I think the Jews have a much stronger claim to Jerusalem than anyone or any entity in islam.
I want Constantinople back. It’s mine, all MINE!
“Ooops. Not U.N., but NATO.”
Good question. No good answers. They should be ejected from the alliance post haste.
An artifact of the Cold War when we needed Turkey for (1) bases and listening posts geographically close to the USSR and (2) Turkey had one of the largest standing armies in the world, in case things ever got hot with the USSR. Now, we still want Incirlik. Otherwise, I don't know.
UN, too, works for me.
The Ottomans may have OCCUPIED Jerusalem for 400+ years, but it was never THEIRS. Just ask the Arabs and Egyptians that fought with the British to end rule of the area by the Ottomans.
Even now the major Sunni states of Arabia and North Africa are opposing Erdogan’s insertion of Turkey into conflicts and disputes in their neighborhood.
If Erdogan sounds like any recent historical figure in laying down outrageous claims of “ownership” of others lands, it would be Adolf Hitler.
Right. Good luck with that.
Israel begs to differ.
This isn’t going to work out the way Erdogan imagines it will.
Better question: why is Erdogan still breathing? Isn't it well past time for one of those magnetic Mossad bombs to be stuck to the side of his limo?
You want to get Nuked? This is how you get Nuked.
Hey Erdogan, the Ottoman Empire is dead and it’s not coming back.
Is Erdogan claiming the “Palestinian” people?
He can have them.
"Attention Shin Bet, Shin Bet--please pick up the white courtesy phone. . ."
Well, if it’s yours then just go on over there and take it? Simple enough? What are you waiting for?
