FedEx built a business model based on hiring part-time staff and offering them medical coverage through the company’s insurance plan. This worked well for them because the premiums tended to be very low. The “package slingers” tend to be younger and healthier than your average worker.

I had a meeting at FedEx a few years ago and toured their Memphis hub one of the nights I was there. I wouldn’t be surprised if 80% of the part-time staff working the overnight shift were students at the University of Memphis.
