Instantaneous expert commentary on presidential debates is almost entirely useless - and I include my own contributions thereto, whether or not they qualify as "expert". What lasts are strange, weird, arbitrary, peripheral aspects. Twenty years ago, in the first debate, Al Gore came on like the class know-all and drowned out Bush's answers with great heaving sighs; he was over-rouged, like an English pantomime dame, and (per my late colleague Bob Novak) excessively large. So then came Round Two. This is from my Daily Telegraph/Chicago Sun-Times column of October 13th 2000:
The second presidential debate is proving a difficult one for the experts:
"Well, Cokie, Bush may have overplayed his hand. By being in command of the facts, talking in coherent sentences and winning the debate, he risks reminding voters of what they dislike about Al Gore."
"That's right, George. Conversely, if Gore can build on this week's performance by appearing even more tentative, uncomfortable and anxious for the debate to end, he may tap into that group of key swing voters who were attracted to Bush when he was a bozo."

Since we're in debate season...
A blast from the past from Mark Steyn. Good laughs within!
And I would add. .. Thank God we were spared this arrogant ass as president.
I like Mark Steyn
No kidding! And we were entertained with him forcing himself on defenseless Japanese masseuses!
“And I would add...Thank God we were spared this arrogant ass as president.”
I still RELISH the FACT that he didn’t even win his home state! :)
“And I would add. .. Thank God we were spared this arrogant ass as president.”
He would have been president if Clinton had been a man and resigned or had been convicted.
I had forgotten about Gore’s sighing. That’s the thing, most people forget the absurdities of previous debates and think that the current debates are the worst ever.
Evene wife Tipper grew tired of his arrogance.
We got Bush. Like having to choose between cancer and treatment.
Lol
How much CO2 did Gore emit with all that sighing?
We probably would have had Gore for 10 years. Two of Clinton’s term & 2 x elected. Cannot imagine what associated problems we would be blessed with.
