Let’s not delve into the motives of the author.
I'm pretty much an outsider on the subject, but I have to ask why shouldn't we question motives of authors? It's an honestly puzzled question.

You can question the motives of the author, but what does this have to do with the content of this report? The facts he presents are either true or false, i.e., Judge Barrett’s detractors are scrutinizing the school she is involved with.

What can be questioned are his INTERPRETATIONS of the facts. But I don’t see that at all in any posts on this thread so far.
