The campus battle over what Ive previously called the equity agenda has recently shifted almost completely from a focus on gender to a focus on race. This has been accompanied by a series of surreal spectacles at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I teach. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests, student activists have made new demands upon the schools administration, while scathingly denouncing anyone they perceive as dissenters.
Just consider our university president, Ana Mari Caucea Latina lesbian whose activist brother was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. One would imagine that shed command a certain level of respect from even the most puritanical social-justice enthusiast. But there is little evidence of that: Student protestors have marked the campus with slogans such as Anti Black Ana, denounced her as a Poo Poo Pee Pee Head, and a white woman (a term of abuse, obviously).
The background to this is a petition containing seven demands put forward by the universitys Black Student Union, including a call to remove a statue of George Washington thats been on campus since 1909. Protestors have installed resistance art at the base of the statue, painted it red, plastered it with posters, and left messages in chalk. At first, university staff attempted to clean the statue and remove the art, but eventually they just allowed it to accumulate. Very little came of the protest other than informing Cauce that they consider her a traitor for refusing to immediately submit to the petitions demands.
As at many other institutions in the United States, the public focus of administrators has turned to the idea of antiracism. The highest-ranking diversity officers from our three campuses sent a joint email in late May with the title Antiracism work is all of our work.

Higher ed is truly a re eduaction camp
Interesting article.
Deft tightrope walking.
Fascinating read!
Interesting that even when ‘giving’ the students the course work they desired....blacks still underperformed.
Given the degree of statistical information available, free choice to choose CS1 and 2, one would anticipate that students starting out behind in skills would either work to eventually catch-up or drop out.
Part of Reges argument is the idea of choice. But...I would be willing to concede students coming from poor performing inner city schools would struggle in a CS course. Not for lack of effort per se, but due to poor study skills and not ever actually finding the study habits that work for them to succeed. And no they would have never developed those skills at an inner city high school. The high affinity of those schools to criminal distractions, poor teacher accountability, and the heavy dependency on indoctrination of the African American experience to those who are living it creates a huge disservice to the student entering college in a technical arena. This is where the ‘systemic racism’ exists.

I know many. Hopefully one day the same for you.
We have many excellent ones at my fortune 100 company and I have known many in my 20+ years.
Re: 4% of UW students are Black
4.4% of Washington state residents are Black.
Re: 34% of the Freshman class are white
68% of Washington state residents are white.
I assume the huge discrepancy in white enrollment is because of Asian enrollment - both American and foreign.
Multiculturalism & diversity is a cancer.
Re: You know many Black programmers
I live in the heart of Microsoft country.
I have met one Black programmer in the last 15 years.
“The Bell Curve” redux!
It’s clearly discrimination at U W resulting in the absurd result of 34% white population at that school.
It’s even worse in the UC system - at Cal this year it’s 21% for white incoming students at a school built and paid for by generations of white people.
Samuel Jackson was one in Jurassic Park.
Also, that black guy in Die Hard...
Why hopefully?
I think his table on "lectures watched" says it all. Some cultures teach self-control and some do not. Those with self-control do better, it's as simple as that. And the race in America with the lowest obesity rate, by no coincidence, is Asian.
Re: “California university system freshman class is just 21% white students”
I checked the Census Bureau data for California.
Believe it or not, California is LESS racist than Washington state!
California non-Hispanic white residents - 36.5%
21% white freshman class is roughly 58% of total California white residents.
Washington state non-Hispanic white residents - 68%
34% white freshman class is just 50% of total Washington state white residents.
Yea, that’s true.
Driving around the UW campus it really shows. It’s like you transported to some Asian enclave.
Didnt look like that in 1985.
It’s a BS stereotype
That’s unfortunate.
What level of involvement do you have with software development? It’s a huge field that extends far beyond the app development of yore.
Sure thing.
Just like all the black EEs and linemen I work with...
