William Green was shot six times while handcuffed after traffic stop in January
Prince George’s County, Md., will pay $20 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of a Black man who was fatally shot by a police officer while handcuffed behind his back in a patrol car, according to the county.
The settlement, one of the largest of its kind, comes about two weeks after the city of Louisville, Ky., agreed to pay $12 million to the family of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman who was fatally shot by police during a raid on her apartment.
William Green was shot six times after being detained following a January traffic stop in the suburban county outside Washington, D.C., officials said. The officer who authorities say shot him, Michael Owen Jr., was charged with second-degree murder. Mr. Owen, who is Black, has pleaded not guilty and awaits his day in court, his lawyer said.
Mr. Owen is suspended without pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation, a police spokesman said.
Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said Monday that there is no appropriate price for the life of Mr. Green, whom she described as a son, father, brother and uncle.
“We believe that the actions taken that night against Mr. Green and ultimately taken against his family warrant this settlement,” she said at a news conference, flanked by members of his family.
Ms. Alsobrooks, a Democrat who previously served as the county’s top prosecutor, said Mr. Owen is the county’s first police officer to be charged with murder for killing someone in the line of duty. She said the settlement funds would come out of the county treasury.

I usually side with the cops, but I can’t see any circumstance where getting shot while handcuffed and in the back seat of a patrol car is justified. But...$20 million????

Mr. Owen, who is not White, is being charged with shooting Mr. Green, who is Black.
What would any white get for same?

Why do you usually side with the police?
“Usually” means more often than not. Not always.
So what reason did the officer give for shooting the guy full of holes? Surely he didn’t think he was just going to be able to kill somebody under those circumstances.
