Trump calls New York Times report that he avoid paying taxes 'totally made up'

President Trump lambasted a New York Times report that said he paid no federal income taxes for 10 of the past 15 years, calling the story “fake news” and arguing that he paid large amounts of federal and state taxes.

“It's fake news, it’s totally made up,” Trump said Sunday during a press briefing less than an hour after the story broke in the newspaper. “Everything was wrong, they are so bad.”

According to the New York Times report, Trump, who has fiercely guarded his tax filings and is the only president in modern times not to make them public, paid $750 in taxes to the federal government the year he was elected and $750 again his first year in office.

The disclosure, which the Times said comes from tax return data extending over two decades, comes at a pivotal moment ahead of the first presidential debate Tuesday and a divisive election.

Trump, whose net worth is claimed to be in the billions, denied that he paid such a small amount in taxes.

“I’ve paid a lot and I’ve paid a lot of state income taxes too,” he said.

Even before being elected to the White House in 2016, Trump was heavily criticized for not releasing his taxes. He has claimed multiple times that he is under a routine audit by the IRS and will release his filings once the audit is over.

“I’m under audit,” Trump said Sunday. “They’re doing an assessment.”

A lawyer for the Trump Organization, Alan Garten, also denied to the New York Times that the president paid such a small amount of taxes – saying in a statement obtained by Fox News that Trump "has paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal government,

The question should not be whether he paid any taxes. The question is, did he break any laws? If he followed tax laws and didn't pay, blame the guys who wrote the tax code, not the one that followed the law.

Exactly, write offs are commonplace in real estate development.

wouldn’t it be fun to create various versions of fake Trump tax returns, for distribution to various Trump-deranged media outlets, and see which fools bite?

Well, it is certain that Trump and his tax lawyers are guilty of conspiracy to comply with the law, they have him on tape.

Right. AND he isnt collecting Social Security like that son of a B Warren Buffet.

Buffets direct income taxes are less than his secretary.

I would bet, that many of these elite bastards that a subverting our system of government use the same scam system to get out of paying income taxes.

That is why I am in full support of getting rid of the income tax and going to a national sales tax-NOT A VAT TAX like the liars and cheats like to label it. Collected at the cash register ONCE. Like some of the the states sales tax.

On FB, the libs are all giddy because Trump stated they were “negotiating” with the IRS. In other words, they think he lied.

I fully doubt they even got them. Its all made up. First off, personal income tax information is private and not available to ANYONE public.

If they got it, then somebody in the IRS is culpable and can be sued along with the NYT.

Indeed.

All that has been proven to me from the NYT “Tax Returns” is: 1) No American should have an expectation of privacy from government, 2) government systems are fundamentally corrupt, and 3) the government bureaucracy is full of biased political hacks, spies and agents who will break any law to serve their agenda.

I simply don’t understand what they expect to find.

Assume, as they did, Trump cheated or broke the law somehow. WHO would report anything related to criminal activity their taxes???

its sheer stupidity.

When I had my business I was audited by the IRS on more than one occasion. It was always about one or a series of write offs or a line depreciation claim.

It actually was a negotiation with the IRS claiming it should have been X and me claiming it should be Y. I gave my reasons and they gave theirs and in the end there was a negotiated settlement with the IRS always extracting it’s pound of flesh.

The IRS negotiates constantly with taxpayers especially those who owe back taxes and will almost always settle for less.

I would not discount the possibility that this information was leaked to the New York Times with Trump's approval.

That's likely what happened with the 2005 tax return information that was sent to MSNBC a couple of years ago.

I think the opposition is stupid enough to reocgnize that this happens to businesses all the time.

It just proves to me how willfully ignorant these democrats are.

This whole story may be a Times lie designed to trick Trump into disclosing his returns. The smart money is that Trump will not fall for it.

Buffets direct income taxes are less than his secretary.

I seriously doubt that.

The claim is his tax rate is less than his secretary's.

He probably pays millions in taxes at the capital gains rate.

At his corporate level your right.

Not at his personal income tax level.

He can pay himself whatever he wants for payroll.
