A controversial drug taken by Donald Trump to ward off the coronavirus may be safer than sceptics initially thought, research suggests.
The president announced in May he had been taking the anti-malarial medication hydroxychloroquine for a week and a half, causing first-time prescription rates and online searches for the therapy to soar.
Hydroxychloroquine is not approved for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, in the UK or US.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stopped testing the drug after a Harvard study found patients on hydroxychloroquine were more likely to develop de-novo ventricular arrhythmia, the sudden onset of abnormal beating in the lower chambers of the heart.
This can cause the heart to beat too fast, preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching the brain or triggering a cardiac arrest.
A team of European scientists has since found, however, hydroxychloroquine was not associated with deadly heart rhythms among patients with a low risk for arrhythmias.
The scientists stressed they only looked into hydroxychloroquines safety. When it comes to efficacy, evidence suggests the drug is ineffective in advanced COVID cases, however, the jury is out on whether it has benefits during the initial stages of ill health.
In June, editors of the prestigious medical journal The Lancet published an Expression of Concern to alert readers to the fact that serious scientific questions have been brought to our attention, citing the Harvard research.
The Harvard scientists found that out of more than 96,000 coronavirus patients, those given hydroxychloroquine were a third (33%) more likely to die than those receiving other forms of care.
This rose to a 44% higher risk when hydroxychloroquine was combined with the antibiotic macrolide.
Those on hydroxychloroquine with macrolide were also over five times more likely to develop a de-novo ventricular arrhythmia

I believe some people (Fauci) and others will be demoted or kick out of the administration as further studies show the efficacy of HCQ. Someone is going to take the hit on this.
There is a revolving door between the FDA, CDC and Pharma. for example the bureaucrat who got Prozac approved later got a plum job at Lilly. This revolving door is worse even than the Pentagon’s. At least there is some awareness of the Pentagon revolving door. The revolving doors at FDA (and USDA, etc) remain completely under the radar.
Well, no $hit! This drug has been prescribed literally hundreds of millions of times over the past 65 years, since about 1955. If there was some big problem with it for short term use (like malaria - for which it was developed - or for other viruses like the China virus), then we would have known about it no later than 1960 and the drug would have been either taken off of the market, or limited to some very special circumstances where nothing else would work.
HCQ can cause some heart problems - such as an arrhythmia - after prolonged use. Here’s some anecdotal evidence that this is not all that common: My mother (now over 80) has had an arrhythmia for over 20 years. She also has RA. Her RA doctor put her on HCQ, but consulted with the cardiologist first. The cardiologist said that it likely won’t be a problem, but that “we’ll have to watch that closely.” That was 5 years ago - and the HCQ has done exactly NOTHING to my mother’s heart. Ditto for her eyes - it can affect the retinas after prolonged use, but she’s been checked for it every 3 months, and again the HCQ has had no negative effects on her.
RE: My mother (now over 80) has had an arrhythmia for over 20 years. She also has RA. Her RA doctor put her on HCQ, but consulted with the cardiologist first.
Makes me wonder if the fact of her using HCQ also PROTECTED her from contracting Covid-19.... I certainly hope so.
“...How many people have Fauci and his ilk murdered by now?...”
Enough that the little PIAPS-loving, commie bassturd has his own security detail now....I can see why.
Yeah but never before has it been prescribed by an Orange man.
Yep. Its chloroqine that occasionally has cardiac side effects.
Thats why HYDROXYchloroqine was developed as a safe alternative.
I want you to think about every time the side effects of chloroqine were ascribed to HYDROXYchloroqine. Remember who said that.
They deliberately flat out lied to you, with the malicious intent of killing you because Orange Man Bad, and Orange Man Bad likes HYDROXYchloroqine, and if enough people die because Orange Man Bad (well, we discouraged or even outlawed the medicine that works, but were going to blame him!) we can get rid of Orange man bad.
NO price is too high! Your nana dies in a nursing home we deliberately seeded with patients who have COVID when safe alternatives were provided by Trump? No matter, Orange Man Bad!
Remember who deliberately conflated HYDROXYchloroqine and chloroqine, they lied to you and want you dead!
It might be a good time to re-evaluate your news sources...
Trump knows more than the specialists at top best institutions in the world, and the journals supporting those elite doctors.
TRUMP IS A FRIGGIN GENIUS!
So a 44% higher risk of dying only for those on one antibiotic?
Big deal. Thats 1/10,000 of the population with a 44% greater risk of dying than the 5 out of 1,000 of the worst off people.
“Makes me wonder if the fact of her using HCQ also PROTECTED her from contracting Covid-19.... I certainly hope so”
