Lawmakers will be forced to consider 20% tax hike if voters nix graduated tax amendment

Illinois taxpayers, who already have one of the nation’s highest total tax burdens, could see a 20% income tax hike if voters don’t approve of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s “fair tax” constitutional amendment in November.

Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton said on a conference call Thursday that the state would have to raise income taxes by $4 billion, more than the income tax amendment would have brought in before the Pritzker administration’s shutdown orders ground the state’s economy to a crawl amid the pandemic.

“To adequately address the budget crisis under our current tax system, lawmakers will be forced to consider raising income taxes on all Illinois residents by at least 20% regardless of their level of income,” she said. “We all know that our middle and low-income families cannot withstand a 20% tax increase and it will only serve to deepen the dramatic inequities that we already see across the state.”

Your sales tax is ridiculously high. Quite frankly Florida is the best tax state.

Rule of thumb: The nicer a name a bill is given the worse it is.

Example: any bill with “Fair” in the title, will have grossly unfair provisions in the full text...

True, 9.75% here, but by living... simply
It can easily be mitigated
And at least the state pays it’s bills.

Every time tax money is raised, Illinois’ government says “Since we now have breathing room, we are going to spend money on these worthy, additional programs we didn’t talk about before now.” Then they deficit spend on giving legal aid to Antarctic penguins or the like and the following year they say, “We have to raise taxes because we have another shortfall.”

They never address the stupid spending or deal with the pension issues. They always have new, expensive pet projects and always need increased taxes to justify it all. They aren’t even worried about junk bond status, because there’s always someone left in the state to tax more. If property is abandoned, the state takes that over and sells it to another person to then pay taxes, so money enters government coffers several ways when that happens.

It’s a beautiful racket that all liberal-run states adore.

Sales taxes are paid by everyone, including visitors and criminals with unreported income.

Income tax is paid only by people with enough reportable income to get beyond deductions and exemptions. In other words, it’s only on the backs of those already working their butts off.

True. Although I believe Florida does as well. DeSantis has done great work so far. It will be interesting to see how next year goes with our tourism in shatters.

How about a slight edit?

“To adequately address the budget crisis under our current tax system, lawmakers will be forced to consider cutting spending by at least 20% regardless of the political impact of the recipients’ level of whining...”

“I wonder if they considered REDUCING SPENDING????”

The problem is under funded pension plans for government workers which are untouchable per the Illinois State Constitution.

“Install a pension cap of 50,000 dollars per year for all state and municipal employees. Co pay their golden parachute health plans with 2500 fees.“

They can’t. The Illinois Constitution says pensions can not be touched.

“There is a fix though, expel Cook County/Chicago and make it pay for its own sins! Then listen to its screams!”

Sounds good to me. Many of us who live outside of Chicago and Cook County would love to see Chicago/Cook excised from the state.

What is hidden in this proposal, besides a higher tax rate, is the elimination of the legislators to get taxpayer approval for any future tax hikes.

Sinister, yes?

What they shouldn’t do under any circumstance is approve a constitutional amendment for a permanent tax. Especially when the word “Fair” is part of it. And especially when they’re going to such lengths to scare people into voting for it.

The inevitable results of a de facto one-party “progressive” state.

In a de facto one-party Progressive state, with that state and that one party in a symbiotic self-protection pact, there is no brake on government, nothing the people can rely on to prevent corruption, corruption by total political partisanship in all that the government does. Government is turned into a machine to protect the party that runs it, with that being the prime objective, turned into the prime directives of that government.

Dearest Citizens of other states/nations:

If you move INTO our corrupt state, please ALSO leave your LIBERALISM/SOCIALISM behind. We are tired of having NON-Illinois natives like Jesse Jackson (born and raised in South Carolina), Danny Davis (born and raised in Arkansas), Bobby Rush (born and raised in Georgia), Barack Obama (Hawaii? Kenya? Indonesia?) Tammy Duckworth (born & raised in Thailand), Raja Krishnamoorthi (born and raised in India), J.B. Pritzker (born and raised in California), etc., etc., coming here and inflicting their socialist “vision” on our state. Things were much better here in the 1980s, when ACTUAL Illinoisans were in charge of our state.

Thank you! (Signed)
Lifelong Illinois Residents now suffering under the policies of transplanted commies from other places.
