Ive attended events for charismatic Catholics. Yes they do speak or sing in tongues. I understand there are two types of speaking in tongues. The first, like at Pentecost, where people were heard to speak other languages, is very rare. The more common kind is a gift of joy that seems to me very similar to scat singing in jazz. It is the gift of being relaxed enough to pray wordlessly, like a happily babbling toddler. (Think of the Scripture about becoming like little children to enter the Kingdom of God.). People who do this are no crazier than Mel Torme or Ella Fitzgerald.
If ABC has indeed spoken in tongues, it is a private matter, I suppose, but I assure you she has thousands of Catholic companions in that experience.
Thanks I did not know that. Kinda like scat singing? Cool - I get it. I’m all for it.
My post was merely to point out the enemy’s line of attack. I apologize to any of you whom I have offended.
Very good description. I have always enjoyed Catholic Charismatic prayer meetings for their sheer exuberance.
Now I know where Amy gets her joy and her strength.
That has been my experience. When I have heard people âspeaking in tonguesâ, it is not a recognizable, linguistically-defined language as was the case in Acts when Pentecost occurred. Paul mentions speaking in the âtongues of men and of angelsâ, which I guess could include either a defined language or the non-defined category. I asked one of the people who engaged in the practice about it and he said said something about a âprayer tongueâ, which I cannot find a scriptural reference for but I have heard no prohibition against, either, in any Catholic doctrine. So if the âRats try to use it as a wedge issue, they’re basically going on another fishing expedition.
