“Correction: This articles headline originally stated that People of Praise inspired The Handmaids Tale. The books author, Margaret Atwood, has never specifically mentioned the group as being the inspiration for her work. A New Yorker profile of the author from 2017 mentions a newspaper clipping as part of her research for the book of a different charismatic Catholic group, People of Hope. Newsweek regrets the error.”
People of Praise has no connection to the book.

“Isnt she a Roman Catholic? RCs dont do no speaking in tongues anymore than Andrew Sullivan does dumpster diving. Get a grip, people!”
Millions of Catholics participate in the charismatic movement - I know a number who have the gift of tongues. The judge in question is a member of a lay organization that is heavily charismatic. I have no idea if she speaks in tongues, however.
“She is a different sect of Catholicism.”
There are no “sects of Catholicism”. She’s Catholic. She’s also a member of a lay organization. Neither is a sect. The lay organization has no ecclesial structure, no bishops leading it, no priestly orders, none of its own sacraments, doesn’t have its own liturgy or feast days, doesn’t have its own canon laws, doesn’t have its own scriptures or canon of scripture, and is open to people of any denomination as well as Catholics. It is not a sect.
I would not connote the gifts of the Holy Spirit with Satan, if I were you.

The biblical gift of tongues was indeed from the Holy Spirit. Not today however. That only leaves one source.
Can you cite one instance in the Bible where someone (like those claiming to ‘speak in tonuges’ today) speaks a language that NO ONE knows?
Are you really this big of a jerk?

I do owe you a big apology. This is a constructive thread in my opinion. It does look like Barrett belongs to a group that believes in ‘speaking in tongues’. I actually just left a church because of this issue as I find nothing in the Bible to back up today what passes for ‘speaking in tongues’. In the Bible they spoke known languages and others heard them in their language. And one was not to speak in church in tongues unless there was an interpreter or ‘non-believers would think the church was crazy. As they do today when someone purports to speak in tongues. Of course it’s only my opinion that today it is Satan pulling the strings of those claiming to speak in tongues. But it’s certainly doesn’t bring non-believers to Christ. It only drives them away.

In your opinion, would the following bring non believers to Christ or drive them away?

So the group Mel Gibson belongs to is not a sect of Catholicism?
Oh yes, some do. Look up “Catholic Charismaic Renewal”.
Apology accepted. I apologize for being wrong too. You are a stand-up person.
Right. But the original Newsweek article specifically said Barrett’s group inspired “The Handmaid’s Tale.” A “friend” on Facebook posted that on Sunday, and got the OMG reactions from her fellow suburban housewife friends. I wonder if they saw the corrected version?
That's funny right there.
So the consensus here is that although The Handmaid’s Tale connection is fake news, she is a member of People of Praise, a Charismatic Catholic group that believes in glossolalia?
Lay group. Not a sect.
She’s a member of this group, https://peopleofpraise.org/about/who-we-are/charismatic1/
Ctrl+F and type tongues and you’ll see it. Feel free to read all their About pages and don’t miss the FAQs with the question “Can a covenanted member leave the People of Praise?”
Odd FAQ. Can I leave?
Being an experienced person, she could easily answer, I have studied and learned X number of languages in my life. So I do/do not have a talent for learning other languages.
That leaves it up to Ka-ma-la to try to explain what she means.
Well Kamala, i'm not sure, but Willie tells me you do!
I’ve only seen one preacher speak in tongues. It was in a church in Mississippi. The same preacher let his thin yet shapely daughter stand up there in her little sundress singing some new Christian song that had a chorus where she basically moaned over and over “I want to feeeel you” (talkin about the spirit of Jesus of course)
Then the collection plate went around for the second time and all the good ole boys wiped the sweat from their foreheads and dug deep into them pockets.
Thank you for this educational and entertaining post!
In a nutshell, yes. People of Praise started among Catholics and, I understand, has mostly Catholic members, but it accepts other Christians. It is charismatic, emphasizing the gifts of the spirit, and that usually includes glosolalia to some extent. Some groups claim everyone should be speaking in tongues, and some don’t. I don’t know what this group’s stance is.
