It wasn’t a choice. Beyond a certain point, events took on a life of their own. The left decided they were going to eliminate all obstacles to their rule. The right merely reciprocated. Spain was fortunate in having Franco to turn the tide. If it ever gets to that point, I hope we have a Franco to right the ship.
