Gig Economy Company Launches Uber, But for Evicting People
Vice ^ | Ashwin Rodrigues

"SINCE COVID-19 MANY AMERICANS FELL BEHIND IN ALL ASPECTS," reads the website copy. The button below this statement is not for a GoFundMe, or a petition for calling for rent relief. Instead, it is the following call to action, from a company called Civvl: "Be hired as eviction crew."

During a time of great economic and general hardship, Civvl aims to be, essentially, Uber, but for evicting people. Seizing on a pandemic-driven nosedive in employment and huge uptick in number-of-people-who-can't-pay-their-rent, Civvl aims to make it easy for landlords to hire process servers and eviction agents as gig workers.

Well, that’s certainly a niche market...

The eviction laws have been made so complex that landlords have to hire lawyers who deal full time in the business. No casual part time lay person is going to succeed at much of anything except almost certainly get themselves hurt (Or killed) screwing around trying to push tenants around

I do Uber, Lyft, and Uber Eats, but I think I will pass on this.

It is something I wouldn't want to do. I would never be a landlord. So many headaches, so little money, it's a thankless way to earn a living.

Depending on the jurisdiction, but more often than not a sheriff has to be present during an eviction.

Being a landlord is super awful, especially in these times. If you are firm with your tenants, you are an a*hole and if you give them any slack, they will walk all over you.

Either way, the law is almost never on your side.

Having good tenants on the other hand who pay on time and give minimal hassle are a godsend. There are landlords who haven't raised the rent on these folks for years because they are so rare and they (landlords) don't want to lose them as tenants.

Motorcyle gangs have proven effective in dealing with problem residents.

That sounds like a good part-time job, except I’d have to get rid of any compassion I have left.

Our tenants over the past twenty years have bought us two houses (we occupy one, they rent the other, one lot), by reducing our "rent" (our portion of the mortgage, taxes and insurance) to less than $500 per month. We renovated ten years ago and increased the rent by two-thirds. We have replaced a couple of appliances, had service calls for maintenance and repairs on systems, but our tenants do the upkeep (painting, small repairs, etc.). Overall, the occasional headaches have been worth it as the property value has more than tripled over the past ten years.

Even the eviction lawyers can’t figure out what is legal or illegal at this point. Lots of tenants are buy new cars instead of paying the rent though.

Meh. In non-Democrat-ruined states, it’s do-able by landlords. My in-laws have a decent rental empire and manage to do it. Just got rid of one lying deadbeat, despite Covid.

Concur big time on that last. We and the in-laws operate like that.

Depending on the part of the country, 30-50% aren’t paying rent. Where they’re calling a rent-strike, it is higher.

Even when evictions are legal again, the courts will be so clogged it will take months.
