President Trump said he would nominate a Supreme Court pick on Friday or Saturday and has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as Senate Republicans lined up behind him and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), rejecting Democrats calls to let the winner of the presidential election make the pick.
Mr. Trump maintained that the replacement of Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, should happen swiftly. We won the election and elections have consequences, he said Monday morning on Fox News. We have plenty of time.
The presidents list has been narrowed to two leading candidates, according to people familiar with the matter: federal appellate judges Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, and Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta.
The president said he has three other people to choose from, though declined to name them. He said he was looking for someone who is young and could serve on the court for a long time. Were looking for a good person.
Judge Barrett, 48 years old, was confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2017 in a 55-43 vote. She is popular among social conservatives and was a finalist for the post in 2018 when Mr. Trump chose Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Lagoa, 52, previously served as the first Hispanic woman on Floridas high court.
More than 20 Senate Republicans said over the weekend that they back moving immediately to fill the vacancy, and many are expected to follow suit as the week gets under way. Two Republican senatorsSens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaskabroke ranks this weekend, saying they oppose action on a nomination before the presidential election.

My gut feeling is that neither Barrett nor Lagoa is the right choice. But I guess there is a good one in the next two or three and hope Trump has the wisdom to discern who that is!
It doesn’t have a chance of slipping out of front and center in public debate.
My guess is Trump wisely put the brakes on being railroaded into the Jeb and Marco candidate. Word had been that she was slated to be announced tomorrow. Then last night Posobiec, I think it was, said the WH was resisting the pressure from Rubio.
This issue is huge and positive for the GOP candidates only if they support the woman pick and get her on the court quickly. I think it sinks Collins, has little effect on Murkowski and would sink the Utah senator with binders of woman if he doesn’t support a female conservative for the high court.
I am saddened to see that the choice HAS to be a woman. But I am equally concerned that the focus would be on anyone except a Constitutionalist whose primary purpose is to decide cases based on the actual words in the US Constitution.
Nothing more than that is really needed.
I certainly do not want to see a Supreme Court judge EVER decide a case based on feels, emotions, penumbras, wise-X personal experiences, etc., etc..
Quite possibly, a better candidate. We don’t want to live through forty years of regret.
Collins is at risk of being sunk from the left in Maine, not the right. And the left is all about whether it is a Trump pick or not. A female Trump pick means nothing special to them.
It’s now Monday no announcement. Dig up dirt on Murkowski, Snowe and black mail them. Trump has refused to support Murkowski, Snowe in Dem hot water over Kavanaugh yes vote close race for both. We can’t afford to lose Senate seats.
He needs to wait until at least her memorial service is over.
Then she's in the wrong party.
From what I have read, Trump really wants Lagoa because his entire Florida election team have told him Florida is a 50/50 proposition without her and she can tip the balance. Trump needs to maximize his margins in the Cuban community in Miami to balance Puerto Rican heavy democrat population growth in the Orlando area since Hurricane Maria.
It was obvious watching Fox and Friends this morning that Trump is in love with the idea of picking her. He kept saying hispanic and Florida like 3 times this morning.
His team needs the extra time to fully vet her record so there are no surprises. She will be the pick unless they find something disqualifying. Trump cares about nothing else but winning the election and Barrett could be very damaging. The democrats will portray her as a religious cultist and it will turn off many of Trump’s pro choice secular voters (WHICH THERE ARE MANY BECAUSE OF IMMIGRATION AND TRADE) in the rust belt. The whole abortion debate has to be on the down low to keep the coalition.
He should do it today or tomorrow.
I think they have enough votes, even Romney with women binders will have to support the woman.
AMEN.
I tend to agree, Hispanics are a HUGE voting bloc, not just in Florida.
Trump should tweet that he will nominate Merrick Garland just to get the instant knee-jerk reaction from 99% of the left that wont even remember that he was nominated by Obama first!
“Dig up dirt on Murkowski, Snowe and black mail them.”

They’ve been in the public eye for decades. The potential replacements for Ginsburg haven’t. Trump has given the Dems at least a week for them to comp up with at least a half dozen “scandals” for the potential nominees. And make no mistake - the Dems will come full force at any nominee.
Even when there’s nothing to the scandals, they take up weeks of additional time for the FBI and other compromised deep state agencies to investigate.
Trump should have struck while the iron was hot.
WTH. Friday or Saturday?
I can understand giving Bad Girl Ginsberg a couple days.
But a damn week. Announce on Wednesday.
Amen
Amen!!
