President Trump said he would nominate a Supreme Court pick on Friday or Saturday and has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as Senate Republicans lined up behind him and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), rejecting Democrats calls to let the winner of the presidential election make the pick.
Mr. Trump maintained that the replacement of Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, should happen swiftly. We won the election and elections have consequences, he said Monday morning on Fox News. We have plenty of time.
The presidents list has been narrowed to two leading candidates, according to people familiar with the matter: federal appellate judges Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, and Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta.
The president said he has three other people to choose from, though declined to name them. He said he was looking for someone who is young and could serve on the court for a long time. Were looking for a good person.
Judge Barrett, 48 years old, was confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2017 in a 55-43 vote. She is popular among social conservatives and was a finalist for the post in 2018 when Mr. Trump chose Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Lagoa, 52, previously served as the first Hispanic woman on Floridas high court.
More than 20 Senate Republicans said over the weekend that they back moving immediately to fill the vacancy, and many are expected to follow suit as the week gets under way. Two Republican senatorsSens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaskabroke ranks this weekend, saying they oppose action on a nomination before the presidential election.

Your points are good. Every potential nominee will need to get their families to a safe place. It is also true they will have decide if they are willing to endure the Kavanaugh treatment.
Could be Grant...? Could be Barrett...?
I worry about this new one Lagoa from Florida...seems to be somewhat favorable to DNC arms like WaPo, and is being pushed by Little Marco...
Makes me pause...
Lagoa is a blank slate from what I can tell. Grant has a real record and is also counter culture (MSM culture). She won’t bend in the end (as best as I can tell). The others, to me, no clue. I don’t see a record.
I would use Janice Brown as the nuclear option if I had to make a recess appointment. If she is willing, her appointment would be valid for two years until the next Congress is seated in 2022. Just prior to 2022, can you see the Dems trying to force the first black woman off the court. At 70, Brown has no other way to get on the court so she may be willing to take a recess appointment that would cement her place in Judicial history.
Justice Ginsberg body is lying in state at the Supreme Court on Wednesday and Thursday. I think thats why President is delaying until Friday and Saturday.
Maybe also they need time to get the nominee some time to get her family sequestered and safe and make arrangement for their security. They are going to need it.
This is EXACTLY the type of person who the court needs. I didn’t look into the men because Trump said it would be a woman but I want to make sure Trump gives her a fair look and not just have her be on the list as a signal. She is precisely what SCOTUS needs right now. It’s bold but they already voted for her within the last few years (52 votes). I think the 52 would have to justify NOT voting for her this time which I don’t think they can do while holding on to the Trump base.
She got 2 black children from Haiti....A lot of shenanigans go on in Haiti I’d bet. Is every I dotted and every T crossed? We don’t need someone compromised who would do ANYTHING to keep the secret. Already got one of those. Britt Grant needs a second, third and a fourth look.
Go after a judge that every suburban soccer mom can relate to and kiss the Senate goodbye. The Dems are in a damned if you do damned if you dont time lock. The question is which course causes the most damage long term?
If he’s smart, he would nominate a Conservative, Black woman. Other than her assumed position on abortion, the Dems would have a really hard time pushing back on her.
Plus, how hysterical would it be if Trump/the GOP were the first party to put a black female on the court?
Because they're Democrats. Of course they could always invent a sex assault victim too. And it's not just the bathrooms, Grant actually made some positive comment about heterosexual marriage, so they're bound to call her a bigot.
Trump has a lot of courage but I suspect at this time he wants to maximize the chances of approval. :(
Thanks for the info! Yeah, I thought Yom Kippur was due soon.
I do not think a female nominee will face Kavanaugh treatment.”
That part is probably true but they will try to scare the hell out of women if it’s Barrett. The coat hanger crap will start if it’s her.
This is why Ginsburgs funeral, lying in state for multiple days and not being buried until next Friday is happening, contrary to Jewish practice. It gives the House time to put together and pass impeachment articles and also for the NY AG to issue an indictment at the state level.
I read, on another thread, that she was being interred, today, at Arlington.
POTUS often surprises us, with his timing.
He would have been able to nominate sooner HOWEVER now with RBG not following Jewish tradition and being interned immediately he has to wait on the nomination!!!
She is laying in repose at the SC for 2 days Wed.and Thur. VERY WEIRD for someone Jewish!!
He can’t look cold hearted. But SCOTUS should schedule only ONE day not two.
