A new poll conducted shortly before the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg revealed that an overwhelming majority of U.S. adults of all political stripes supported holding hearings for a nominee if a vacancy opened on the nation's highest bench.

Marquette University released the survey results on Saturday that showed 67% of adults believed the Senate should hold a hearing if a vacancy occurred during 2020's race, with only 32% opposition — and similar strong numbers across Republicans, Democrats, and independents, who supported holding confirmation hearings at 68-31%, 63-37%, and 71-28% respectively. The poll was completed three days before the death of Ginsburg, the 87-year-old liberal icon who was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1993. Ginsburg earned praise from Democrats and Republicans upon news of her death.

Polls are used to propagandize people. This poll is obviously meant to do just that, to hold up the Presidents pick without any reason. Disregard this poll.

CNN had a poll this morning that showed the opposite. I imagine we will see conflicting polls until after the election.

A President’s responsibilities and obligations do not wane as his term draws to an end. Nor does his power diminish and in some cases his power actually increases.

Will the Dems and RINOs disrespect the late Justice Ginsburg?

Ginsburg In 2016: ‘Nothing In The Constitution’ Prevents Final Year SCOTUS Picks

The Times called her answer “immediate” when asked if the “Senate had an obligation to assess Judge Garland’s qualifications.”

“That’s their job,” Ginsburg told the outlet then. “There’s nothing in the Constitution that says the president stops being president in his last year.”

I agree with you as long as we’re talking first term. End of second term is called ‘lame duck’ for a reason.

I do not believe this poll for one minute. Many people couldn’t name one SCOTUS member.

The term of President lasts until 12:01 pm on inauguration day. First term or last term. Filling a SCOTUS position or launching a military response, if need be.

Marquette’s poll was completed before RGB passed. CNN’s poll was likely a quickie online. IIRC, even Marquette’s polling leans left.

I’m sensing a general consensus that the nomination should proceed. R wimps Collins and Murkowski seem to realize it, even though they’d prefer to wait.

Rs have an obligation to fill the seat when it becomes open, not when the Ds would prefer. Rs realize there will be hell to pay if they concede to the Ds what is perhaps the most important decision in the last 50 years.

Cruz was spot on predicting a 4-4 SC will be disastrous if the election is contested as it was in 2000. Massively disastrous, and more likely than just “ possible”.

To renege on the R obligation, leaves it open until Jan. (3-4months away), with a D nomination process and confirmation another 2 months more. 5-6 months with a deadlocked SC ? NO F’N WAY.

As for election year SC appointments: the constitution does not instruct avoiding SC nominations 25% of the time.

McConnell can etch his importance in US history, and will do so by making it clear to the doubters. We confirm now....or get the hell out of our party, Lisa, Susan. 4 Ds lost senate seats last time they tried this crap. Care to go for more ?

RGB’s passing has nationalized EVERY senate race. Every senator on the ballot will be pressed to justify their decisions.

As for Biden, he’s in a pickle. If he fails to ID his possible nominees, he’ll scare most of the electorate. If he does ID them, he’ll scare half of his party along with those already freaking about the future.

I was thinking about the last year or two of a president’s term. Since he really has nothing to lose, he can really push his agenda. I think “lame duck” refers to the two month period between the election and the inauguration if the sitting president will not be in the White House the following January.

Fine, have a hearing but keep it short, maybe 3 days, so the Democrats can’t pile on cr@p to make the nominee look bad. Then go straight to the vote. If 3 RONO senators go weasel we have to make sure they never get anything for their state and never get reelected.

You’re right - I didn’t use the lame duck’ reference correctly.

I meant more of the ‘fatigue’ that sets in with the public during the last year of so of any two-term president’s time in office. I think that’s part of the reason McConnell was able to get away with the Merrick Garland thing. Obama’s power had waned and people wanted the new president to make the selection.

I am totally in agreement with you that the full 4-year term should be used to push through the agenda the people elected a president to enact. I just think it’s easier to do that in the first term.

Fill that seat! Now!
