I may be wrong about this, but if Trump fills this seat with a recess appointment that may only last until the end of the current Senate session — which is December 31st.
Maybe someone who is not interested in a long-term assignment to the SCOTUS would take the spot, assuming this is allowed.

I think you’re right - but that means a Republican Supreme Court majority for EVERY vote to will impact the outcome of this election (such as voting by mail, voter ID, harvesting, everything!), even with Roberts defecting.
