I fear there won’t be another civil war.
I certainly hope there will never be a civil war in this nation again.
The first one never even needed to happen. If the founders have ever rolled in their graves, it was then. I think they believed profoundly that they had created a Constitution that would eventually lead to the end of slavery, without war.
But many individuals were very pig-headed, back in the day. I hope we’ve evolved, since then.
The forces propelling the current unrest have little in common with the 1860s. Now, the pre-WWII Spanish Civil War, that might be something worth studying. Most people in the U.S. know little enough of our own national history, so that bloody struggle in Spain is mostly a big question mark. Add in some later Maoist twists and that's the sort of "civil war" that we could see. The new "Red Guard" is betting that we won't see the need to organize and fight back until it's too late.
