Fine. I propose instead that social workers from Agents of Change be sent in alone, and the cop can wait outside with the coroner to clean up the mess later.

I think that everyone has a poor attitude concerning this. Hiring large numbers of these people and having them physically overwhelm a shooter or attacker would solve a large number of problems.

Oh, now we get to the meat (or color) of the matter:

Nancy J. Smyth, dean of the School of Social Work at the University at Buffalo, acknowledged the institution of social work is not entirely pristine in its endeavors, noting that, like the police, social work has a long legacy of racism and of supporting white supremacy.

“And, by white supremacy, I’m not talking about white supremacists. I’m talking about a structure of society and policies that puts white people in power and keeps others out,” Smyth said. “This isn’t about bad people. It’s about bad systems that need to be restructured.”
***************
Sounds like no one can help these people! Just let them run amok??

Ah, here’s the solution:

Members of Agents of Change called for the creation of a mobile emergency first responder system to respond to mental health calls. The group also advised the implementation of a Behavioral Health Advisory Council to determine how best to meet the community’s mental health crisis needs without the intervention of police officers, and called for the city to provide more funding for crisis prevention and intervention by redistributing funds from the police department.
***************
Looks like throwing more money and lip service will do the trick!

Didn't take them long to figure out that they might get killed. There's a reason people call police.

Rochester, NY has proposed the same thing and it's already active (last I heard). dumb a** Mayor not so lovely Warren is scum.

Seems like the Social Workers are smarter than I would have given them credit as generally ultra-liberals.

“Social workers do not de-escalate with tools used by police enforcement, such as guns, pepper spray and spit bags. Social workers are trained to de-escalate with the most powerful tools, empathy, compassion and connection,” Bowman said.
——
This incorrect and bigoted. I am in LE. We do yearly required day long trainings with tests to implement and train on de-escalation trchniques that have nothing to do with use of force. We do week long trainings yearly that focus solely on communication using compassion in stressful situations.

Bowman is a terrible and ignorant person.

As an aside, I dare Bowman to wear a bodycam all day and do his job.

Your are right about throwing more money at it, as long is it fits their world view.

Nancy admits her profession was built on systemic racism and is so to this day, but if you give us some money we will solve it, trust us. However these same people say defend the police as they are racist and you cant fix them. Don’t you even dare suggest more funding to have more officers, more training, etc.

Before I went into Corrections, I worked for New York State as a Safety Officer for about 6 months. Safety Officers are usually staffed at State psychiatric centers...at least they used to be. Things may have changed since 1980. Safety Officers were the ones that civilian staff on the psych wards called to restrain out-of-control residents. We'd have to restrain them while one of the medical staff was able to get approval to give them a shot of something, to calm them down. We weren't allowed to cuff them while they were on the units. If we were called to pick up an individual that was being admitted to the psych center for evaluation from Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, we were allowed to cuff them until we got to the door of the unit they were being admitted to, and then the cuffs had to come off.

Although we had whack jobs in the prison system, I got paid far more to restrain convicts than I did psych patients. At least you could use cuffs in the prison. And in the prison, civilian staff did not restrain inmates...only officers were allowed to do that.

Bernie’s plan states there are too many police on the streets these days. They can claim they’re not defunding the police, but if you plan on cutting police presence on the streets, then you won’t need as many officers as before, which means you are defunding the police. Bernie’s plan also calls for social workers, psychologists, EMT’s to respond instead of police. These people didn’t sign up for that, and aren’t going to be too happy if they are ordered to be first on the scene of an emergency call. Most of them have never had to restrain someone, because it’s not part of their regular job duties. If I was a police officer, I wouldn’t trust any of them to have my back.

In theory it is a great idea, skip the police, just send social workers. They sign up for it, so they deserve what they get, right (that’s what they say about police).

But the problem is, when you send a social worker to talk nicely to the guy with a gun, it’s not just the social worker who ends up dead, it is the woman who called the police to come rescue her.

For the most part social workers are a fraud on society. Most are more dysfunctional than their clients. What a pathetic scam on the vulnerable and on the taxpayer..

The mayor also said the social workers have a history of calling the police when things go south on their cases. Strange they never mentioned that.

I heard a sound recording of a vicious, horrible criminal refusing to give up to the police, saying he has rights being violated, don't threaten him with tazing and finally the description was that this was from the body cam of the police sgt. who was killed. He was too patient with the creep.

So send a social worker when the cops can't handle them.

Maybe they could add a 3rd person into the mix....a news reporter. If he had a first-hand view of the situation, then maybe they could get the story right the first time.
