President Trump said in a press conference Wednesday that the U.S. coronavirus death toll is "very low ... if you take the blue states out," while defending the nation's response to the pandemic compared to other countries around the world.
Why it matters: Of the top five states with the largest death tolls from the virus, three have Democratic governors, suggesting there is little relation between the spread of the virus and the political parties of state leaders.
Of note: It is unclear precisely what Trump's definition of a "blue state" is, nor did he offer specifics to back up his claim that blue states managed the virus at all differently from red states.
Trump has long targeted "Democrat-run" cities. What he's saying: "If you take the blue states out," he continued, "we're at a level that I don't think anybody in the world would be at. We're really at a very low level, but some of the states they were blue states, and blue-state management."
He then went after states' reopening strategies, saying: "By the way, we'd recommend they open up their states. It's hurting people far more than the disease itself." The other side: "Trump continues to politicize the coronavirus," the Democratic National Committee tweeted. "COVID isn't a red state or blue state issue. 9 of the 10 states with the most infections per capita have Republican governors. This virus has impacted all Americans."
The big picture: New York (D), New Jersey (D), Texas (R), California (D) and Florida (R) have to date reported the highest number of deaths from the virus in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University.
These are the states with the largest populations in the country. "But red states and battlegrounds, such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Arizona and Michigan were also in the top ten," USA notes. Meanwhile, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced last week that the state's coronavirus infection rate has remained below 1% for 30 days and COVID-19 hospitalizations have dropped to 410 the lowest since March 16. The state, once a coronavirus epicenter, is curbing the spread of the virus, even as restrictions ease. To date, the U.S. has reported 196,485 deaths associated with COVID-19, JHU reports. What to watch via the Washington Post: "The University of Washingtons Institute on Health Metrics estimates that there will be nearly 413,000 deaths by the end of the year.
"Of that total, almost precisely half are projected to have occurred in red states."
The point is that states led by Democrats have more deaths than those with Republican administrations (e.g., New York versus Florida). Yet, at the same time, Democrats claim they would have done better. Obviously the evidence shows otherwise, despite the way Axios obfuscates.
Yep, add to that all the riots in Blue states and we all know how bad Dem politicians are.
The President is right. There are more psychopaths in states with higher densities of Democrats. They can’t even get enough people to straighten up with mandates in those places.
Blue cities are the source of all evils. From failed schools to violent crime to poverty to homeless and more.
So the President of the United States looked at objective, verifiable data and pointed out objective, verifiable facts about that data? And this is somehow a problem?
Oh, but wait, Orange Man BAD!
CNN and others are becoming increasingly transparent in their complete and total loss of objectivity when it comes to President Trump. At some point, even the people sitting in the middle of American politics have to start to see how this president is being attacked by media outlets for no reason other than they just hate him.
Its true.
100% true.
Louisiana and Michigan could be exceptions, but they are due to blue cities.
lol. Statistics can be used to show many things. The most important is the top 4 states with the highest death rate (deaths/mill) are 1. NJ 2. NY 3. Mass. 4. Conn.
Must have a lot of older people, sicker people, people in crammed housing. . .half of all deaths are minorities I think as well.
If all states had the same rate of death per 1 million as New York there would now be over 550,000 deaths in the United States.
And if all states had the same death rate as Texas there would now be less than 170,000 deaths in the United States.
About two-thirds (68%) of the 44 least affected districts the bottom 10%, with an average 13 deaths in each district are represented by Republicans in Congress.
So I can safely say, according to PEW research, Trump was right. And I searched through some of the liberal sites that were saying Trump isn't telling the truth, and not one put up traceable numbers. So they aren't lying...they're just not telling the truth. Lib playbook. rwood
Axios is Comcast
highest number of deaths is not relevant number, the Highest number of Deaths per Million comparison would be apples to apples.
Media always lies and distorts.
If you look at Texas per population is is nowhere near the top of anything.
“Figures never Lie, but Liars Figure”.
If someone is going to blame Trump for covid-19 then they certainly have to hold governors accountable - even more so.
If all the states had the death rate of Virginia, there would be just under 100,000 deaths now. we did a lockdown, but it was pretty lax compared to others. We didn’t force stores to close, just to limit customers to 10 at a time, and we never shut down restaurants completely, just seating, and we opened up back in June. We never had an outdoor mask mandate. We never had draconian fines.
We did let the COVID get to some of our nursing homes, which drove our death counts in april/may, but since then we’ve been pretty good on the death rate.
There is no excuse for any state to be doing worse than us. We have some big cities and big population centers, being right next door to DC. We have a metro in some of our counties.
Fake fake fake news. Texas has a population of 29 million. Florida has a population of nearly 22 million. Its deaths per million of the population that counts, not total deaths.
Going by deaths per million, all the worst affected states are run by Democrats and the best performing states like South Dakota are run by Republicans. Take out Dem run states like New York and New Jersey and America's deaths rate would have been far far lower.
Axios is a joke.
