Photos: China Begins Final Assembly of Next Two Advanced Aircraft Carriers, Aims for 2021 Delivery

Photos have emerged on Chinese social media showing the assembly of two massive warships at the Jiangnan Shipyard outside Shanghai, where the PLAN’s next two aircraft carriers are being built. Anonymous, independent sources told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) they are indeed the first two Type 002 carriers, the first of which will be completed next year.

Not nuclear powered. House J-15 fighters. Uses the same type of EMALS launch system as CVN Ford which cannot launch rapidly.

Have the Chinese solved the problem that the USN has not?

Or are the Chinese confident that the USN will solve the problem in a timely fashion so they can steal it

"“Assembly of the new aircraft carrier has begun and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year, because the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down progress,” said the first source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

“Workers are also starting the keel-laying for the new carrier’s sister ship.

"Real Admiral Ma Weiming successfully developed the electromagnetic take-off technology that year (2015)

"Ma also developed the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) chip, a key component of high-efficiency electric energy conversion systems.

"China is expected to launch its next-generation aircraft carrier within a year and construction on a sister ship for the new giant vessel has been hastened, two sources close to the projects said.

“Assembly of the new aircraft carrier has begun and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year, because the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down progress,” said the first source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

“Workers are also starting the keel-laying for the new carrier’s sister ship. Both ships have been built by the Jiangnan Shipyard outside Shanghai.” Laying the keel is deemed the official start of construction on a new ship.

“It’s a challenging job because the Type 002 is our country’s first domestically designed aircraft carrier.”

"Construction on the first Type 002 carrier started in early 2015. It will become China’s third after the Liaoning and Shandong ships.

"Unlike the first two Russian-designed Type 001 aircraft carriers that were equipped with ski-jump ramps, the new vessel will have the world’s most advanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system, equal to that used by the US Navy’s new-generation Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier.

"The electromagnetic take-off technology means less wear and tear on the aircraft and allows more planes to be launched in a shorter time than the ski-jump system.

"Hong Kong-based military commentator Liang Guoliang said the Type 002 was not expected to be nuclear-powered because so far only Chinese submarines had used the technology and none of its surface warships were nuclear-powered.

“The nuclear-powered technology is designed for China’s fifth aircraft carrier, which is likely to be built in the Dalian Shipbuilding yard,” Liang said, referring to the manufacturer that built the Shandong ship.

“The Central Military Commission (CMC) decided to install steam catapults on the Type 002 carrier when it started construction in February 2015, but the plan was changed when Real Admiral Ma Weiming successfully developed the electromagnetic take-off technology that year.”

"A top engineer, Ma also developed the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) chip, a key component of high-efficiency electric energy conversion systems. Liang said it prompted President Xi Jinping, who also chairs the CMC, to make changes to the aircraft carrier design because IGBT would better support the conventionally-powered ships using the more powerful and advanced electromagnetic launch systems.

"However, Zhou Chenming, a researcher from the Yuan Wang think tank, a Beijing-based military science and technology institute, said the Type 002 carrier would continue to carry the J-15 ship-borne fighter jet, which is now flying on the decks of the Liaoning and Shandong.

"China bought its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, from Ukraine in 1998 and spent eight years retrofitting it. The ship is the only Chinese carrier to have reached initial operational capability (IOC), the basic requirement for warships. The Shandong is expected to meet IOC standard next year.

"Zhou said the Liaoning had been used as a training platform for crew members of China’s new aircraft carrier strike groups.

“The Liaoning is too old to be a warship as its hull was built in 1985. China’s blue-water navy should be based on the new-generation carrier strike groups like Type 002, or even future Type 003 carriers, and other advanced warships,” Zhou said.

"China plans to build at least six aircraft battle groups for the water by 2035.”

Wasn’t that a line from Pinkley (Donald Sutherland) in The Dirty Dozen?

I would believe very little of these claims. Probably the only morsel of truth is that they plan to build 6 by 2035. Other than that, don’t believe any of it. All of these claims come from Chinese sources and those sources should never, ever, be believed.

I remember the movie Patton when he was standing on the reviewing platform watching these troops marching by all spiffily dressed and Patton turns to the guy next to him and says that.

“Having aircraft carriers without the experience of like our Navy for over a hundred years means nothing. The Japanese also found that out especially during the battle of Midway: “

Your first sentence is true but Midway is a bad example. By midway the Japanese had more combat carrier experience than we did.

Well if they did, they sure didn’t use it since we sunk four and damaged the rest and they never came out with a carrier force again; they turned to using battleships.

OK, but many other sources, not Chinese - many from our military, saying same much the same. Then there are all the satellite images.

In addition, their fifth carrier is planned to be a nuclear CVN. None of this is heresy and is common knowledge.

Just because ypu’ve been told that doesn’t make it true. Remember, many western sources are comprimised and on the CCP payroll, never believe anything you hear about how great their weapons and platforms are, none of it is true. And of course I am speaking in relative terms between the present known capabilities of chinese and russian weapons and platforms vs US and Allied weapons and platforms. No weapon made by the CCP or the Russian’s ever lives up to the claims they make about them, and none of them are developed in a vacuum. We always develope a counter weapon or tactic to minimize their effect even if they get through the defense net.

Of course the Pentagon is saying these things, that kind of scare tactic and endless war are how they continue to demand more money from Congress. Sometimes they’re actually justified with a little scare tactic, a few years ago the Chinese military was only about 10 years behind the US technologically, but with the weapons and sensors and data crunching the new combat systems have will restore the 25 year or so advantage we enjoyed previously, when their deployed, the Arleigh Burke FLTIII are just about to hit the fleet, so are the new CVN’s and the Columbia SSBN. The Virginia Class SSN’s are already being deployed as are the F-35’s and the new Amphib flat tops that will be carrying them, add to that the MLP’s and the new upgraded missile systems, and the cherry on top is next year the first Laser defense weapons will be installed on the first Navy ships. And with Laser based defenses, that will gut the speed advantage the vaunted Hypersonic weapons have. Also the Chinese are adopting the same loser strategy the Russians adopted during the Cold War, numbers over quality, it didn’t work then and its doubtful it will work now. So stop believing everything you hear about how far we’re behind the Chinese militarily, nothing could be further from the truth.
