India confirmed more than 83,000 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, bringing its total caseload to nearly 5 million.
The Health Ministry also reported 1,054 new deaths, driving total fatalities up to 80,776.
With 4.93 million confirmed cases, India has the second-highest total in the world after the U.S. Infections have maintained an upward surge amid an ease in coronavirus restrictions nationwide. More than 600,000 new cases have been confirmed in the last week alone.
Maharashtra, with more than 1 million cases, remains the worst-affected state in India, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
India, however, also has the highest number of recovered patients in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University. The countrys recovery rate stands at 77.8%, with nearly 3.8 million people recovering from the virus so far, according to the Health Ministry.
Indias Parliament, which reopened Monday after being shut down for more than five months due to the coronavirus, said that more than 10 million migrant laborers had made their way back to their home states from various corners of the country during a strict nationwide lockdown. It said there was no data available for the number of migrant deaths.

Gosh...I wonder how bad the headaches are? Can they taste their food after 3 days? Or 4?
Define “case”.
My daughter and her husband, both just under 40, became cases. Though the temporary loss of the sense of taste and smell were annoying, for them both it was a one week long mild flu.
Meanwhile, two years ago, my wife had the flu and it was a four week ordeal that almost killed her. For my brother it was a six week ordeal that involved an ER visit, and he had had a flu shot.
Meanwhile, my friend’s 94 year old father in a retirement home became a “case” and he never showed symptoms. This was four months ago.
CV19 is not a think unless you are already old and infirm - with VERY rare exception.
A "case" is NOT a death.
The media is hysterically hyping the 'increase cases' narrative while 'projecting' deaths.
Death rates are slowing so they have to hype "cases".
The media is deliberately causing an unnecessary panic.
And whats the population of India?
Had an interesting chat yesterday with a business contact who has a lot of dealings in India.
He says it’s a scam there as well. The government started to pay subsidies and then....boom.....testing skyrockets and case numbers go up sharply.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!!
Only 80k fatalities? Gosh USA has nearly 200k fatalities.
While INdia population is 4 times begger than USA,
with population density 12 times that of USA.
ALL LIES. They cannot separate the false positives out, so the data is JUNK.
Yes but how many of those 5 million have recovered ? A case typically doesn’t last longer than 3 to 4 weeks. The media creates the impression that once infected you have active disease for life.
India is 4 times bigger population, and 12 X population density compared to USA.
Was their any effort to stop or reulatel the distribution of HCQ in India?
Yep. I’ve said since early May that I don’t care about the “case” count. I care about the death count. And even then I want the demographic information. How many people under the age of 40 with no “serious” comorbidity have died.
The answer seems to be so low that this should not even be a thing. Yet it’s causing rioting all over the world and especially in the US.
No wonder the bible calls us sheep.
India uses HCQ
Both as a prophylactic and for early treatment
The media is hysterically hyping the ‘increase cases’ narrative while ‘projecting’ deaths.
If no one is really dying, then who cares.
and then there is this:
https://www.foxnews.com/sports/nfl-has-77-apparently-false-positive-covid-19-tests-from-lab
NFL reports 77 players test positive, run all the tests again and they come back negative - wonder if those 77 were dropped from the CDC stats (I doubt it), also wonder how many other fake positive cases there have been?
Hearing credible information that these tests (antibody test and the active test) are basically a coin-flip in terms of accuracy.
My son and DIL (live near SF) chastised us for not wearing masks outdoors and walking past someone who was about 4 feet away from me. I had taken a quick video of a town fair on the square from last weekend where there was live entertainment, the first we had been to all summer. It was about the same amount of attendance as we have at the farmers market every weekend, maybe a few more. I was excited to see a live band playing 100 feet away from us, so took a quick video to share with the family. Because I was taking video and looking past people, I didnt see a young man approaching, and he had his head turned and didnt see me right away. Needless to say, I couldnt even feel his presence near by, but it was there on the video. The brief encounter was about 2 seconds long.
The funny thing is, he said not wearing my mask was taking extraordinary risks to my health. Then I said, when we are outside we dont need to wear masks. Plus, doesnt the mask protect others, not myself? Actually, I said way more than that. Mind you, I am sixty and have NO comorbidities. None. Plus we take all the vitamins and supplements regularly mentioned as prophylactics.
It was ridiculous. I told him I appreciate his concern (which is, IMHO, jealousy). He lamented that he cant go with his wife inside the doctors office while they are doing an ultrasound on their first child.
I think he needs to take that up with his state government.
‘Define case’
THAT, my friend, is the key to this whole matter.
You and I have the same attitude about this thing.
I was going into our local wal mart a couple of weeks ago and the kid at the door told me I need to wear a mask. I told him that some experts say masks help, and other experts say they make it worse, and that I believe the ones that say they make it worse have much stronger evidence, so I consider wearing a mask to be dangerous.
He let me in without a mask.
When I’m approached by a Karen telling me it’s irresponsible or other such nonsense when not wearing a mask, I use the Dalton line from Roadhouse - “Well, opinions vary.” I then like to add my own follow up: “Thanks so much for sharing yours, Karen.
