AG Barr Discusses Timing of the Durham Investigation

Speaking exclusively to Townhall on a recent flight from Cleveland to Washington, D.C., Attorney General Bill Barr discussed the timing of U.S. Attorney John Durham's investigation into the FBI's Russia probe and efforts by the Department of Justice to ensure it remains non-political on the matter.

"I've said that there are sort of two missions, I see it. One is to get to the bottom of what happened and get the facts out about that and we are going to do that and you know, try to be careful about that, that we don't do anything that would unduly interfere with the election," Barr said. "And then there's the issue of whether someone crossed the line. In the course of these, in my view, unjustified and horrible abuse of power, actually cross the line and committed a federal offense and I can't really say anything about the status of that investigation except that it's continuing and we'll be careful about not bringing indictments in a way that can be viewed as interfering with the election."

In August, FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith became the first individual under investigation by Durham to plead guilty to charges of illegally doctoring information on a FISA warrant application for Trump campaign advisor Carter Page in 2016. Barr has been careful about setting expectations for additional indictments or guilty pleas.

"You need strong evidence of intent, it seems to me, before you can charge that kind of crime so developing that evidence is a time consuming process. Most of the people who are mouthing off about 'well why aren't these people already indicted,' they don't understand the criminal justice process. People get lawyers, sometimes they won't talk to you. Even if they talk to you they'll say they'll take the fifth and you have to get documents and frequently fight over documents and fight over things in court so the investigation is a cumbersome process. It's not something that can be done quickly," he continued.

Issues of cooperation can delay any investigation, but the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic also temporarily halted the ability for Durham to convene grand juries earlier this year. In addition, previous and lengthy investigations from DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz and Special Counsel Robert Mueller presented investigative conflicts, pushing back the Durham timeline.

"The other thing that people sometimes forget is that, you know, they may have in their own mind some thing that they think can be indicted but there are a lot of different allegations that have been made. A lot of people have sort of picked apart this and have come up with various theories. Part of what Durham has to do is sort of chase all of those down. That takes time. He didn't really get going until May or so [2019]. And then hired up people and started getting going. People forget that he didn't get access to the Horowitz stuff until December," Barr said. "When I hear people on TV saying, 'well we've had four years why nothing?' We haven't had four years. The first two years of the administration nothing was done at all. It was all investigating Trump and then Mueller went half of the way into the next year.In terms of investigations it's actually moving along but I know people are impatient," he continued.

Sessions, Huber, Mueller, Strzok ..

It’s an easy pattern to discern.

For the same reasons those guys loaded up Dems and blocked the Truth, their comrade in Connecticut does the same.

“He can stuff his bagpipes.”

He’s likely practicing a funeral dirge, in anticipation of Trump losing.

The DC Uniparty money machine is overwhelmingly Deep State-controlled and DOJ/FBI/IRS/CIA/SCOTUS-protected. A deep, systemic infection. Possibly only constitutional military tribunals can end the disease.

I tend to believe that if an AG is going to indict high-level politicians, office holders and acolytes, he needs a bullet-proof case.

Nearly flawless.

The worst possible outcome is acquittals, dropped charges and those proven false before arriving in court.

I can wait to see the outcome of this investigation as long as the outcome shows it was done properly and indicts any crime it discovers.

And if this one comes up empty and hollow, we’ll know once and for all the US Justice system is corrupted beyond repair.

And act accordingly.

It’s not interfering with an election if provides important information about the upcoming election. And the big deal is that if the Democrats are elected, the investigation ends, and no one is held accountable.

We are talking about constitutional law, not social justice crap.

The Republicans are going to have to take back the House as well as reelect President Trump....otherwise members of this coup will go free...and the Left will continue to break laws and ignore the Constitution and those laws with impunity.

This election is about Socialism or keeping our Constitution coupled with Law & Order...under a strong leader named, President D. J. Trump. Not two weak Socialist/Marxists, Biden & Harris....the whole world would suffer.

Don't let the fear of the BLM, antifa, or George Soros' gang etc. keep America on her knees....FIGHT!

Even if you get rid of it, something has to replace at least most of its functions. Those managing such an agency would have the exact same temptations as the most recent batch, and I don’t hold out much hope that they’ll be any better.

No, the problem isn’t the particular agencies, bureaus or departments - it’s with the entire government. Government as a whole has gotten too big and too powerful. There’s simply too much money and power flowing out of DC for it not to attract literally tens of billions per year in influence-peddling of one kind or another. This is the core of corruption - eliminate the government controlling $4 trillion/year, dial it back to 1/5 of that or less, and you will automatically have far less corruption, because it won’t pay as much.

Of course, I do think that there needs to be a government reform bill put in the hopper in one House or another, and made to pass in a form that metes out positively draconian penalties for being a corrupt government official - and I’d put harsher penalties on abuse of power than upon merely lining one’s pockets.

I’m not holding my breath waiting for either an 80% reduction of the size of government or a draconian reform bill, but that doesn’t make both of those things absolutely necessary to restore our Republic.

There is much we can agree on.

I would agree that cuts need to be far deeper that just the FBI. I would argue that they are the pitbull defending the deep state, so cutting out their money artery would help accomplish that objective.

I would agree that there may be some functions useful that they perform. I would argue the current FBI is rotten to the core and cannot be fixed. We need to eliminate the Varangian guard, not reform it. Maybe something can be built better in the future.

All fantasies aside, this republic has been dead for more than one hundred years, and we are just hearing the groaning of the visible timbers under the strain of the outside storm just before it shatters.

If we are lucky only millions will die.

I thought that Sessions was bad but Barr is even worse.

Correct. Sessions at least had the excuse he was recused. Barr has no such dodge.

It was the Barr DOJ that assaulted General Flynn for over a year. It was the Barr DOJ that insisted we wait on Horowitz report when he was not investigating the CIA at all. It was Barr who was fine with Durham hiring a bunch of Democrat prosecutors. It was Barr who gave a comfy perch to returning DOJ coupists from the Mueller hoax. It was Barr who never pursued their prosecutorial misconduct. Etc., etc.

And this turd Barr dares to go out there and say they just won’t talk to him, and he can’t find any evidence.

You can’t find evidence if you don’t look for it. Barr allowed Horowitz to slow walk his administrative report for over a year, turned a blind eye to Wray’s obstruction, Mueller coupist evidence destruction, etc., etc. The proof is in the pudding with Barr: Criminal coupists guilty as sin and free as birds.

Why aren’t they squeezing Clinesmith?

Because “they” hate President Trump every bit as much as Clinesmith does.

Barr could have used the power of his office to go after the plotters, turning them against one another, any time he wanted. De did not. He has wasted time to the point of the coming election to use it as an excuse to drag it into the next administration, which, I believe, he expects to be Democrat. Otherwise...WHY? Dudes owned.

The DOJ didn’t think it needed any strong evidence of intent when they charged everyone connected to Donald Trump.

On the other hand, we’ve also see the poor quality of those cases, and how much they fudged things when they didn’t have evidence.

If the globalists, neocons, and intelligence community tried to sway and overturn the election, how in the hell is THAT not important for us to know BEFORE election day?

An excellent counter-argument.
