As literary scholars, we attend to the histories, atmospheres, and scenes of anti-Black racism and racial violence in the United States and across the world. We are committed to the struggle of Black and Indigenous people, and all racialized and dispossessed people, against inequality and brutality.
For the 2020-2021 graduate admissions cycle, the University of Chicago English Department is accepting only applicants interested in working in and with Black Studies. We understand Black Studies to be a capacious intellectual project that spans a variety of methodological approaches, fields, geographical areas, languages, and time periods. Research topic: Evidence of institutional racism in the plays of William Shakespeare. Of course, since he is a very dead white male, the study of his plays is probably forbidden.

University of Chicago has NO entrance requirements. You don’t have to have a high-school diploma. Just walk through the door and you’re in. As I recall, it’s in what’s now an all-black neighborhood. They probably teach in Ebonics.
Why do people support these universities..

This is true racism. Defund the progam - no taxpayer funds.
Kowtowing liberal wimps. Most of them hate black peoples when it comes down to it. But they like the feeling of looking down on them, so no sacrifice is too great, for that feeling of superiority.
If you convince everyone that what you get paid to teach is not worth knowing, how does that affect their jobs? Liberal arts colleges are collapsing everywhere. How can you have an English Dept. that denounces Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats, Shelly, Tennyson and T.S. Eliot.
Oh, right. They call it “language arts” now. Pygmy war chants about killing small animals is now the cultural equivalent of King Lear. That’s like comparing a wooden spear to a nuclear submarine.
I’ve stopped donating to Vanderbilt. That money goes to Hillsdale College now.
Hmm....I wonder how often it is that a student’s “Statement of Purpose” on the application doesn’t even resemble the student’s thesis topic. So this could all be lip service.
On the other hand, if the faculty is telling this to prospective students, they ought to go somewhere else.
If you told them you wanted to specialize in ancient Egyptian literature, they’d probably accept you (on the hypothesis that the ancient Egyptians were black).
