'The Very Definition of Tyranny': Superior Court Judge Upholds LA County's Ban on John MacArthur's Church Services

On Thursday, Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled against Grace Community Church and its pastor, John MacArthur, issuing a preliminary injunction allowing Los Angeles County to ban indoor church services. MacArthur’s lawyers, Trump attorney Jenna Ellis and Thomas More Society lawyer Charles LiMandri, announced their intention to appeal at the earliest opportunity.

“Although this is a temporary setback, we will continue to fight for Pastor MacArthur and Grace Community Church’s constitutionally protected right to hold church,” Ellis said in a statement. “Church is essential, and no government agent has the runaway, unlimited power to force churches to close indefinitely. The County’s argument was basically ‘because we can,’ which is the very definition of tyranny.”

“Without limiting government’s power in favor of freedom and protected rights, we have no liberty. We will fight for religious freedom, as our founders did when they wrote the First Amendment,” Ellis added.

While Ellis noted that the judge went “out of his way to repeatedly state that he is not ruling on the merits,” LiMandri excoriated the court for failing to address the church’s serious legal concerns.

“We are disappointed in the ruling on the preliminary injunction as the court did not apply the strict scrutiny analysis to the government order that we believe is required by the California Constitution and legal precedent,” he said. “The court also did not properly consider the medical and scientific evidence that the current number of people with serious COVID-19 symptoms no longer justifies a shuttering of the churches.”

“Nor do we believe that the court gave adequate consideration to the fact that churches have been treated as second-class citizens compared to the tens of thousands of protestors,” LiMandri added. “More than ever, California’s churches are essential. Therefore, we plan to appeal this ruling to ultimately vindicate our clients’ constitutionally protected right to free exercise of religion.”

Pastor MacArthur called the ruling “inexplicable.”

“The judge said the ‘scale tipped in favor of the county.’ 1/100th of 1% of Californians with a virus apparently wins over the U.S. Constitution and religious freedom for all? That is not what our founders said,” the pastor said. “Nor is that what God says, who gave us our rights that our government—including the judicial branch—is supposed to protect. The scale should always tip in favor of liberty, especially for churches.”

That’s fine...there will be a court that will overturn this...it may have to go to SCOTUS, but it will be overturned.

Watch this man: The final decision will depend on what side of the bed he wakes up in the morning.

Judge should be dragged out and hanged in public. Maybe get a point across to judicial activists.

I hear ya...though I think this case is too clear cut (of course, not for California and it’s federal courts) for SCOTUS not to slam California...I see a 6-3, 7-2 or 8-1 decision (should be unanimous, though).

Judges make up their own rulings these days regardless of the law. We are a lawless nation.

If you think SCOTUS will overturn this, you don’t know John Roberts.

The only people that will overturn this are the people themselves. This is tyranny. You have to stand against it.

If you go to a church, call your pastor and demand that he open the church this Sunday.

There is no legitimate reason to keep it closed. Only open rebellion wil stop this tyranny. They can’t arrest all of us.

We hang together or we hang separately.

John Roberts is only one justice...SCOTUS should rule in a large enough favor that Robert’s vote won’t matter...if not, then SCOTUS is broken.

Tyrannosaurus Wrecks us all...our founding, our heritage, our Constitution, our principles, our babies, our children, our seniors, our health, our wealth, our faith, our fellowship, our friends, our families, our freedom, our house, our republic, our life.

These TYRANTS among us should be extinct. Instead they want to make us extinct.

C’mon November. Ready - Aim - Vote

BIG ‘RATS ALERT

SCOTUS has been broken since Roe v Wade. There are 5 left wing judges on the bench now. Roberts isn’t even a liberal. He’s a lefty. I wouldn’t trust him on any issue. The SCOTUS is no longer a judicial body. It is entirely political.

Again, don’t disagree with many of your points, but on this one I believe SCOTUS would do the right thing...

This actually has already gone to SCOTUS in a case about two months ago challenging CA over applying harsher restrictions on churches and religious services than on other gatherings. It was 5-4 - with Roberts casting the deciding vote in favor of CA.

So I don’t think there’s much hope there. Resistance is the only way.

I know they won’t. This is a spiritual battle. SCOTUS is on the side of Satan.

We either exercise or 1st Amendment in the face of tyranny or we will most certainly lose it. The courts are not going to rescue us. They are Hell bent on destroying us.

If you attend a church, then show up in person on Sunday. 1st Amendment, use it or lose it.

The time has come for civil disobedience when a democratic judge says that people of this congregation cannot pray in this United States!

This is an issue in which I am willing to take to the street.

These are my rights given to me by God. Who do these arrogant people think they are?

Resistance is the only way.

That is worthy of much thinking and reflection.

What does history show us?

What does God’s Word show us?

It is time for all of us to do mental preparation for when it happens to us.

On the other hand it reminds me of Corrie Ten Boom. She wondered if she had enough faith to do what was right.

Her father said, “When I send you to the story to get something when do I give you the money?”

Corrie said, “you give it to me just before I go to the store.”

“That is right, I give it to you when you need it, not before.”

The day for an overwhelming show of strength and force by our side is long overdue. And not just for this, but for all the “usurpations” that have been heaped upon us by this, now, tyrannical government we are subject to.

Where is OUR counter-protest?
