Joe Biden threatens ‘personal price’ if business leaders oppose attempts to unionize

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Monday threatened to impose “a personal price” on business leaders if they resist attempts to unionize during his presidency. Biden made the threat as he vowed to be the most pro-union president in history during a Labor Day webstream with AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka. “I’m going to hold company executives personally liable for interfering with workers who are attempting to unionize. It’s not enough just to have their corporations pay a fine. If they’re part of the problem, they are going to pay a personal price,” Biden said.

When I was in field service engineering starting power plants up, I learned a lot about unions.

In Longview, Washington, the electricians proudly called themselves the “FLEs” which stood for “Fat Lazy Electrician.” There was no way to get them off of the job at the end.

In Snowflake, Arizona I picked up a wrench and caused a grievance which almost caused the job to get shut down. I had a small adjustment to make on a coal pulverizer which I could have done in a few minutes. Instead, I had to get the electrician to hold the drop light, the millwright to turn the wrench, the boilermaker to disconnect a pipe to the boiler, a laborer to hold the broom and put up a scaffold plank and another trade or two. I think I had seven guys there watching and doing nothing most of the time.

The boiler in Snowflake was almost 200 feet tall and there was one small elevator sized for the operators. All the trades would wait for the elevator, even to just go up one floor. There would be a LONG line waiting for the elevator at all hours of the day. None of them would walk up one flight of stairs. I was hoofing it up and down that boiler building 10 to 20 times a day and usually running up and down (I got into great shape and had strong legs then!). Sometimes the tradesmen would wait so long that the lunch whistle would blow and then the whole waiting for the elevator thing started up again after lunch.

I came out of those experiences surprised that anything ever got build in the USA.

They use their political power to force businesses to comply with their dictates.

That's the definition of fascism. When the labor market is tight, as it was pre-covid, companies actually have to compete for workers and HR managers actually have to work.

When jobs are scarce, as they were in the ObaMao days, then jobs in private industry can be doled out like political favors as they are in the public sector. Unions beholden to those in charge of the political levers of power make this process easier and also grease the palms of the politicians with union dues extracted from the workers.

Threaten companies—and then watch them disappear to off-shore while they laugh at you...

Good plan, Joe.

Not!

Just un-effing believable. I never thought I’d hear this from a major party candidate!

Not really that unexpected, though, given Biden's personal history.

As Dave Barry used to say, “You can’t make this up!”

There’s no way I ever could have made those stories up! I was SO disgusted, especially because I was making a piss-poor salary as a degreed engineer, getting no overtime, and typically working 60 hour weeks, all the while watching those lazy bastards hauling down double and triple time on holidays and any hours over 40.

Foreign workers and deadbeats in the US always know how to play the labor system.

Heck Obama had it so if businesses hired out of the employment office there was a kickback to the company. Thousands, if the employee lasted just a year, went out to companies. This is why the employment agencies don't do much for Americans...there's too many programs for foreigners. Though Trumps certainly curtailing that along with Ivanka who is spear heading all these company training programs.

Biden made the threat as he vowed to be the most pro-union president in history during a Labor Day webstream with AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka.

Richard Trumka--the name is familiar. . .

A hooded Ronald Fino told a congressional panel on Wednesday that Arthur Coia, the general president of the Laborers International Union of North America, is beholden to the Mafia. The Republicans on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, in turn, tried to tie Coia to President Clinton. . .Fino, the former Buffalo laborers union leader turned FBI informant, wore a heavy black hood over his head to protect his identity as he testified behind a three-sided screen. He told the panel that Coia has consistently surrounded himself with figures from organized crime, including bosses from New Jersey's notorious Genovese family. . .The hearings brought strong protests from AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney and Secretary-Treasurer Richard L. Trumka. . .: FINO LINKS PRESIDENT OF LABOR UNION TO MAFIA IN TESTIMONY (07/25/1996)
