Road Trip: Dover Air Force Base, Delaware

Dover Air Force Base or Dover AFB is a United States Air Force base under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), located 2 miles southeast of the city of Dover, Delaware. 436th AW is the host wing and run the busiest and largest air freight terminal in the Department of Defense.

Dover AFB is home to the 436th Airlift Wing (436 AW) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), known as the "Eagle Wing", and the AMC-gained 512th Airlift Wing (512 AW) of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), referred to as the "Liberty Wing". It was previously the only base to solely operate the massive C-5 Galaxy and now operates both that aircraft plus the C-17 Globemaster III.

The 436 AW has two active flying squadrons (the 3rd Airlift Squadron, which now operates the C-17 Globemaster III, and 9th Airlift Squadron), and the 512 AW has two Air Force Reserve flying squadrons (the 326th Airlift Squadron and the 709th Airlift Squadron).

Dover AFB is also the home for the largest military mortuary in the Department of Defense, and has been used for processing military personnel killed in both war and peacetime; the remains of those killed overseas are traditionally brought to Dover AFB before being transferred to family.

The Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs has also been used to identify remains of civilians in certain exceptional circumstances, in 1986 for identifying the remains of the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, and in 2003 for the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

AFMAO is charged with fulfilling the nation's sacred commitment of ensuring dignity, honor and respect to the fallen and care, service and support to their families. A solemn dignified transfer of remains is conducted upon arrival at Dover AFB from the aircraft to a transfer vehicle to honor those who have given their lives in the service of the country.

Labor Day went really well for me and Gizmo yesterday. We had a great visit to Comanche Lake.

I know. I’m going to be so mad if it is. LOL! However, I just read that because the temps have been so high...close to 100...there will be very little accumulation on roads. And hopefully on runways. LOL!

It’s snowing around the JH area according to Weatherbug. I need to peek at the cams.

They have had high temps, that’s for sure. That should help a lot keeping the accumulation to a minimum.

I need to take a peek at the JH cams too. I didn’t know they were getting snow already. BRRRRRRRRRRRRR

It’s definitely snowing up there and is the wind ever roaring! I almost need to put on a sweater after seeing all that. Daaaaaang!

Yeah, I keep finding stuff. LOL! I was shocked at how hard it was coming down in JH. Of course, it’s going to warm up the rest of the week, sort of, so maybe there won’t even be any left except on the peaks when we get there. I’ll know ahead of time, though. :) I’m definitely taking a coat. AND some cords!

Now I really am going. See ya tomorrow for a quiz. Maybe about snow. Just kidding. :)

You keep finding really neat stuff too. LOL! Some of the views are stunning. But right now, they raise goosebumps just thinking about how cold it is with that wind.

I hope it does warm up while you’re there so you can enjoy getting outside in the fresh air. No dust!
