ILNIUS (REUTERS) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko could be about to give away his country's independence by signing an agreement on deeper integration with Russia, Lithuania's foreign minister said on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has for many years pushed for closer ties with Belarus under the auspices of a unified state, and raised the idea again last month.

Lukashenko has in the past rejected such moves, accusing Russia of wanting to swallow up his country, but now faces protests and the threat of Western sanctions over an Aug. 9 presidential election which opponents say was rigged.

Russia has stood by Lukashenko throughout the protests and says he will visit Moscow for talks in the coming days.

"(Russia) will now quickly finish what they weren't able to for 20 years, and it is very worrisome", Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said in televised comments.

So Lukashenko has a choice of stepping down and being respected for it. Or bowing to Russia and becoming a powerless puppet and reviled as a Quisling.

Lithuania’s Gov Officials always quake any time they see Russia operating near the Baltic states. However hundreds of US troops arrived in Lithuania recently, plus they’re part of the European Union and Nato.

They’ll take power over respect every time.

True but the irony is that he won’t have any real power. But evil is seldom smart. And in the long run it never is.

Lukashenko wants to hold on, after all he’s ruled there for decades. And it sounds like Putin doesn’t have any concerns if the Lithuanians push Lukashenko out the door.

Putin might get rid of him right away. Ol’ Ludeshenko is for it either way.

Funny thing is, originally it was Lukashenko who wanted to reunite with Russia, with him in charge.

Then Putin came along.

There already is a Russian-Belarus union state. It’s been in existence since 1999.

That would be a good thing for just about everyone but Putin. Belarus has run out of money and credit, which is the cause of the current regime’s collapse. Now Putin will have to subsidize the place, and he ain’t got much himself. So this would bring the end of his regime much closer. While making the people of Belarus loathe Russia even more.

While different nation states, they signed a unity agreement circa 2000.

Now it appears they’ll move forward with full integration.

Being part of Russia is several steps up for every person in Belarus.

It is also their historical reality. They have always been part and parcel of Russia, except when being part of a greater Lithuanian/Polish/German state.

No harm here.

Belarus is more USSR than Russia RIGHT NOW!

Vids of their parades & other events make Belarus look like a Stalinist theme park.

Putin doesn’t appear to like Lukashenko and said he’d prefer the people decide.
