Most people forget that 100 years ago it was commonplace that half of children in a given family did not survive to adulthood
Well a 100 years ago was 1920 so perhaps children born from 1880 to 1910 or so were as you describe. Children born in 1920 had much different outcomes as medicine was making huge strides then...at least in the Western nations.
Not a criticism though. As an adult I still think of farms and horse and buggy as 100 years ago as I did say as of 25 years ago in 1995. I realised recently I have to start saying “150 years ago” for some historical perspectives I try to draw from. Getting old I guess...
