The problem is they DO learn. They learn that it is good to be all-powerful. They don’t want to be the people purged in camps or waiting in long lines at grocery stores. They want to be the ruling class.

With the libs it is subtle. They want to be the ruling class like you say but they consider it to be a moral imperative or noblesse oblige or savior of dark skinned people. Only they the libs can make the world fair, end all suffering, stop global warming, etc. They will do that mostly by voting for an authoritarian who will take money from the rich. They don't admit it is authoritarian of course.

The communism in Easter Europe collapsed only after they ( the communists) realized that with all they special status, their living standard was far below the average US Joe. At some point the moribund economy could not feed even the leaders (well, except for the very top). The communists collapsed when their dreams were reduced to dreams to achieve some kind western lower middle class status.
