It is prudent to answer that way in case there is a recording of a conversation in which the word “standby” was used.
By saying he doesn’t recall, he is not only making his statement unimpeachable (nobody can prove or disprove what he recalls), but he is also conveying that there was no emergency - there was nothing memorable about the appointment.
I think he answered correctly.
