New Jersey's Department of the Treasury announced a gas tax increase of 9.3 cents per gallon due to "lower fuel consumption trends, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic." The increase will go into effect this fall.

According to the treasury department, consumption of gasoline fell by a total of 38.7 percent from March to May in the state. Diesel fuel consumption decreased by 16.5 percent. The need for gasoline and diesel fuel continues to be low as people work from home and limit extracurricular activity due to the ongoing pandemic.

Yet they want to do away with gasoline altogether.

What’s going to happen when AOC makes everyone drive electric cars? The gasoline tax will generate nothing.

taxing something decreases use

That's what I was told. My Economics professor was obviously a lying, dog-faced pony soldier

1) This is a tacit admission that the funds were being used for things unrelated to road travel or the need would have declined too.

2) When the usage goes back up, expect them to rescind this increase. Not.

They’ll either tax you on the amount you WOULD have used or they’ll tax you for not using it, and call it Alexandriacare. They have precedent for that now. Thanks Ebola!

Here’s the deal:

New Jersey has to generate $X billion in fuel tax revenue just to pay its bond obligations on major transportation projects that have already been built. When traffic volumes — and gasoline sales — decline by 50% during the pandemic, it’s not like the state can just reduce its bond payments by 50% or shut down Interstate 80 or the Pulaski Skyway.

It’s a terrible predicament no matter how you look at it.

Reminds me of when a city (it might have been Charlotte) mandated reduced water consumption and then raised the water rates because of the lower water consumption.

Grew up in NJ. It’s a different place now. Benefits, which are few, no longer trump expenses.

That’s New Jersey, its psychopathic governor and Democratic legislature. People are out of work and can’t afford to travel, jobs are gone (no income taxes paid), no toll road money due to less traffic, and these Marxist/Mafia bastards raise gas taxes.

I guess they got their degrees in Economics from the Marxist Economics Departments of Rutgers and Princeton.

They also got their BS Degrees (Bachelors in Bullshit) from the same places.

Jersey was once a state that was half sane. Now the Democratic/Marxist virus is spreading to the whole state.

Time for the “Red Dawn” Wolverines equivalents to politically arise in NJ and take down the Marxist, lunatic invaders who now rule them with an iron hand.

So, they want to penalize people for using less fossil fuels and allegedly helping the environment?

That’s the same kind of thinking that gave us Obama’s individual mandate (aka the Individual Shared Responsibility Payment).

It’s an archaic law from 1941. It won’t go away because someone is greasing someone else’s palm to keep it for some reason.

Virginia did sonmethng similar not long ago.

Since the popularity of fuel efficient cars has increased, they are now buying less gas, the state is collecting less taxes so their democrat governor decided to increase the fees on vehicle registration on any vehicle getting more than 24 MPG I think it was.

When he did it, their governor said it was a response to people not paying enough gas tax due to more fuel efficient vehicles...

So they demand you drive a Prius, because it uses less gas, then tax the crap out of you because it doesn’t use enough gas...(and bring in more tax money)...

Typical democrat logic...

Can I say democrat and logic in the same sentence?

I told my brother about this, sent him a link to the article, he said ‘OH great, like my twice a year property taxes aren’t enough’...he lives in VA...

"lower fuel consumption trends, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Should say "by the boneheaded decisions made by politicians in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that anybody with half a brain could have seen causing this problem 5 months ago"

The irony for the left is that gasoline taxes are very regressive, particularly hitting the middle class much harder (as a percentage of their income) than the wealthy.

Of course the left hates the middle class, but the gasoline tax has no significant impact on the wealthy.
