The latest swath of applications brings the total amount of jobless claims to more than 58 million since the pandemic began to roil the job market, wiping out the 20 million jobs added over the last decade by a near three-to-one margin.

According to the Department of Labor’s latest report, which breaks out the insured unemployment rate (a ratio of people on unemployment benefits divided by labor force) through August 8, Hawaii is currently suffering the worst employment picture with a nation-leading insured unemployment rate of 19.8%. The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico and Nevada round out the top three, with insured unemployment rates at 19.2% and 17.3%, respectively. California followed the top three at 16.1%.

There are plenty of jobs in New York. These people aren’t looking. I see many everyday.

Maybe it’s not what they were doing but they are good salaries and a job is a job

I wonder if some states are tougher on the unemployed than others. Collecting unemployment here is a joke. You don’t even have to show up anymore you just ring it in.

You haven’t had to apply in person or wait on a weekly line in 20 years in NY.

That’s just great.

Why not deliver the weekly check in a Cadillac?

And I’m sure a lot of folks are working off the books while getting these checks.

Same old same old.

Nobody goes to the unemployment office anymore. It has been online for years.

I did the same thing in 1980 when Carter killed off a construction industry. I spent my free time doing side jobs and walking the streets of Tucson handing out Reagan campaign literature.

The CT gov is so concerned with the pandemic virus because the state’s fiscal health is in the crapper. I hope to bail out before the elephant in the room wakes up.

Same here. How soon do you think you'll make your Great Escape from CT? I fear for us it'll still be at least 1.5 - 2 years. Hope that's not too late. :-(

The U.S. jobless rate was 9.6 percent in 2010, and the national employment-population ratio was 58.5 percent.

In 2010, 15 States reported annual average unemployment rates of 10.0 percent or more. Nevada recorded the highest rate, 14.9 percent, followed by Michigan, 12.5 percent, and California, 12.4 percent. (This was the first time since 2005 that Michigan did not post the highest unemployment rate among the States.) North Dakota again registered the lowest jobless rate among the States, 3.9 percent in 2010. The States with the next lowest rates were Nebraska and South Dakota, at 4.7 and 4.8 percent, respectively.

Eight States reported the highest jobless rates in their annual series: California, 12.4 percent; Colorado, 8.9 percent; Delaware, 8.5 percent; Florida, 11.5 percent; Georgia, 10.2 percent; Idaho, 9.3 percent; Nevada, 14.9 percent; and Rhode Island, 11.6 percent.

CT was fiscally on the edge before CCPVirus hit, now Lamont has no idea what to do, except keep up the CCPVirus charade. I fully expect them to push for tolls next year.
