Nonetheless, people in Chinese pharma won’t be thrilled at being offered up as sacrificial lambs to keep Huawei in clover. In the distant past, people in various commercial sectors have had very violent reactions to having their livelihoods endangered by the powers-that-be. One even spawned an uprising that inspired one of China’s Four Classic Novels.

Playing dirty has consequences when everyone else is angry and playing smart. In the short term China’s intransigence is really good news for India. The worse China handles this the more PM Modi smiles. In the long run it benefits the U.S. drug industry and every other country who realize dependence on China is too much of a risk.
