As part of its efforts to create what it is calling a more inclusive environment within the workplace, the Royal Canadian Navy announced Thursday changes to English rank designations.

The RCN’s junior ranks will soon be known as Sailor Third Class (formerly Ordinary Seaman), Sailor Second Class (formerly Able Seaman), Sailor First Class (formerly Leading Seaman), and Master Sailor (formerly Master Seaman), according to a news release issued Thursday from the Canadian Forces

Politically correct True-dope. The self important, self-absorbed, self described 'feminist' who has, in the past, groped a female reporter, yelled at a female Liberal MP (his political party), and threatened Kanadahar's first female Minister of Justice.

Oh well, it could be worse. He/she/it could have changed the ranks from 'seaman' to 'seaperson' so, I guess 'sailor' is not so bad. After all, he/she/it prefers the term 'peoplekind' to 'mankind'.

True-dope. Doing all he can to make Canada and even bigger laughingstock on the world stage.

Sails oppress the wind. They try to harness the wind. Harnessing is controlling.

since this whole BLM thing started, there has been a move to get rid of the term “master” as in Master’s Tournament etc.

Looks like the Canuckle-heads will have to re-consider these names.

They could have just remained true to their Royal Navy roots - Ordinary Rating, Able Rating, Leading Rating, (and I suppose Master Rating, given they’d added a rank at some point). (or Ordinary Rate, Able Rate, Leading Rate).

Alternative terms used, instead of Seaman in the Royal Navy for decades - probably over a century although I would have to check that.

No real problem with this. “Sailor” is a time-honored description, and “Seaman” has over the years become a punch line in a bunch of really terrible old jokes.

In the Royal Canadian Navy, the Third Class Sailor will be manning the third dinghy. The Second Class Sailor will be manning the second dinghy, and the First Class Sailor will be manning the first dinghy which also serves as the Flagship. As there is no room on the three dinghies for the Master Sailor, he or she will be reviewing the fleet as they sail by the the quay. Hip, Hip, Hooray.

This is really dumb. I have repeatedly told the Royal Canadian Navy that their rank structure should start with Person 1. Then comes Person 2, Person 3, etc.

So they can’t blame me when the lawsuits are filed.

The old, traditional ranks go back to the Royal Navy in the 19th century, with the exception of Master Seaman, which I don’t know the origin of.

But the rank progression for both the British and Commonwealth navies in both world wars was: Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Chief Petty Officer.

That’s fewer ranks than US Navy. Actually Leading Seaman is equivalent to a 3rd or even 2nd class petty officer in our navy, at least functionally.

So, it’s sometimes hard to make an exact comparison between US and British/Commonwealth enlisted ranks.

A few years back Canada tried integrating all of its armed forces into a single defense force. I remember a cartoon showing a Navy chief crying in his beer because he was now being called “Sarge”.

During WWII, the RCN, doing convoy escort duty, improvised within hours, the first towed decoy to counter the German acoustic homing torpedoes.

A more “inclusive” environment? One would think that uniformed members of a NATO nation's armed forces would be “exclusive”...as in “ex” traordinary...”ex” ceptional. No room for affirmative action or social experiments.
