Trump to announce $750 million deal with Abbott for at least 150 million rapid coronavirus tests

President Donald Trump plans to announce Thursday the purchase of 150 million rapid Covid-19 tests as part of a $750 million agreement with Abbott Laboratories, a White House official confirmed to NBC News.

Trump plans to use his speech at the Republican National Convention to announce the deal, the official said.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. is leading the world in testing,” White House communications director Alyssa Farah said in a statement to NBC News. “This is a major development that will help our country to remain open, get Americans back to work, and kids back to school. The Trump Administration is proud to partner with Abbott labs to make this purchase possible to help the American people.”

The Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use approval late Wednesday to Abbott for its new coronavirus antigen test, which is the first Covid-19 test that delivers results in minutes on a testing card, similar to a pregnancy test.

Shares of Abbott were up more than 9% in intraday trading Thursday.

Representatives of the White House and Abbott Labs did not immediately return CNBC’s request for comment.

Two questions:

1) How rapid are they? ( Minutes? Hours? )

2) How ACCURATE are they?

Thanks, anybody know how accurate they are compared to the standard SWAB test?

Hugh and series. If true this might be some good news.

Ultimately what is needed is for people to be able to test themselves on demand whenever they want. I know there is a cost element to that and what I stated just might not be practical. But if we could get to that then people would become more confident and life might get back to some sort of new normal whatever that is.

I am aware of this. They claim 95% accuracy. It hasn’t been approved by their own country’s version of the FDA.

High specificity, low sensitivity.
Great positive predictive value, average negative predictive value.

:: Abbott for its new coronavirus antigen test ::

Don’t get too excited, folks.
This test will tell you if you have already HAD IT and recovered.
NOT if you have been exposed to it.
This information will be helpful for the convalescent-plasma crowd.

Still very useful for those who want to get back to work, or students wanting to go back to school.

Abbott Labs (based outside of Chicago) is a great American company... they are at the forefront of molecular testing... their equipment is in every hospital lab in the country.

I had the antibody test. Came back positive for current infection. Had a PCR done a week later. That came back negative.

I don’t think the quickie can be worse than what we’ve got now.

According to this 97% accurate. Plus you will be able to go to your local pharmacy and have them administer the swab test in the store and get results in 15 minutes. If the credit card size pad changes color, you have it. If it does not, you don’t. Pretty simple.
