It's entirely possible that the shootings were justified via self-defense. That will come out in a trial...However as you note, he was in possession of a firearm and was under the age of possession in WI. *If* he crossed state lines with a firearm, that comes under federal jurisdiction - and more potential problems.

May or may not come out. We obviously don't know the facts well, but he was in possession of the firearm illegally. He inserted himself in a dangerous situation, apparently with no connection to the store owner he may have been defending. Apparently, per another poster, he confronted the a man breaking a car window and fired a warning shot in the air. If the prosecutor can establish he provoked the initial confrontation and subsequent chase, self defense goes out the window. The incidents I've seen on the tapes clearly look to be self defense, but if he was part of provoking the incident, it won't matter at trial. Big problem. Hopefully he'll be able to plead to something not too life damaging. Hopefully he doesn't post anything over the top on social media. The parents, don't know where but the victim's lawyers will find them for the civil suit. And maybe law enforcement in IL, depends on whether the kid had an FOID, if not he possessed the rifle illegally in two states. And someone owns the rifle, a 17 year old can't purchase one.

Whether or not he was supposed to be there armed or not is a question for the lawyers to sort out. Perhaps if more of us were actually out on the street helping defend these places from being burnt down and looted, then we wouldn’t have young people out there doing the job and risking their lives and freedom....Me, I see the kid retreating and still retreating and the asshole who got shot in the head wouldn’t stop his aggression, so he got exactly what he deserved.

I don't disagree. Other than perhaps just how the lawyers will sort it out. I don't think he'll walk away unless, as some have done, the prosecutor sticks with only a single high charge.

I read the first shoot was him responding to being hit with a pipe. Definitely got some fog of war going on.

Being chased and having a Molotov cocktail thrown at you doesn’t seem as life threatening, although that’s kind of a relative judgment. Under more normal circumstances being chased with a Molotov cocktail would surely justify self defense.

Given the chunk of meat blown out of the pistol wielding assailant's bicep later on, I'm pretty sure that if he had shot the first guy in the head with his rifle it would have made a more immediately fatal injury. Can't say about the caliber.
