Road Trip: Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut

Naval Submarine Base New London is the United States Navy's primary East Coast submarine base, also known as the "Home of the Submarine Force". It is located in Groton, Connecticut directly across the Thames River from its namesake city of New London.

CTnsbnewlondon6

Naval Submarine Base New London stretches along the east side of the Thames River, straddling the communities of Groton and Ledyard. While Groton is often referred to as the “Submarine Capital of the World,” the Base proudly bears the title - “Home of the Submarine Force.”

Almost every submariner in today’s Navy will be stationed here for training. A tour of duty in one of the fast-attack submarines home ported here or with a pre-commissioning crew for a new submarine under construction at General Dynamics Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton may follow.

Occupying more than 680 acres, with more than 160 major facilities and 15 nuclear submarines, Naval Submarine Base New London supports fleet readiness by providing quality service and facilities to Naval Fleet, Fighters, and Families. The Base mission is twofold: to homeport and put Submarines to sea; and to support the Submarine Center of Excellence that trains Sailors to take Submarines to sea.

CTnsbnewlondon3

Naval Submarine Base New London is also home to more than 70 tenant commands and activities including Commander Submarine Group Two; the Submarine Learning Center; Naval Submarine School; the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory; and, the Naval Undersea Medical Institute.

Went to sub school there in 1963. then onto the Threadfin and then the Picuda.
Loved the sub service.
The boats I was on were diesel with limited showers and water.
When we would return to port, the loving wives and children would hug their father and then move back as we all stunk.

Wonderful Reward

Bible in a Year:

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

Psalm 119:18

Donelan, a teacher, had always been a reader, but one day it literally paid off. She was planning a trip and reviewing her lengthy travel insurance policy when on page seven she discovered a wonderful reward. As part of their “It Pays to Read” contest, the company was giving $10,000 to the first person to read that far into the contract. They also donated thousands of dollars to schools in Donelan’s area for children’s literacy. She says, “I’ve always been that nerd who reads contracts. I was the most surprised of anyone!”

The psalmist wanted his eyes opened to “see wonderful things” about God (Psalm 119:18). He must have had an understanding that God wants to be known, and so he longed for a deeper closeness to Him. His desire was to see more of who God is, what He’d already given, and how to follow Him more closely (vv. 24, 98). He wrote, “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (v. 97).

We too have the privilege of taking time to ponder God, His character, and His provisions—to learn about and grow closer to Him. God longs to instruct us, guide us, and open our hearts to who He is. When we search for Him, He rewards us with greater wonder at who He is and the enjoyment of His presence!

By:  Anne Cetas Reflect & Pray

As you open your Bible and read, how is your heart and mind opened to God and His ways? What would you like to know or experience more of?

How I love Your Word, God. It’s sweet to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.

I was at sub school there in 1979. Qualified on the USS George Bancroft SSBN 643, blue crew, afterward. I remember the Groton had a good pizza place in town that came around the barracks in vans with ready-made small pizzas. For a southern boy (18) from Chattanooga, TN, that was the best pizza I had had. I hear they do the water tower/escape training any longer, people who have been there will understand. That was simply exhilarating.
