It started one ordinary day, in one otherwise ordinary session: A beautiful young woman I had known for a few years wanted to cut off her breasts. (Details changed to protect identity.)
What happened? In my mind, the first concern was cancer.
Nothing. I just hate them. Id really like to be rid of them. I was just wondering what you thought.
So I told her. She had a long history of abuse, abandonment, and self-mutilation. Given that, I suggested, didnt it seem like another aspect of self-hatred and rage? I urged her to take time to really consider all the ramifications -- its effect on her physiology, on her partner, on her children.
She bristled and said I was being unsupportive. I explained I couldnt be supportive of something that was an extension of existing pathology.
She found another, more supportive therapist, and is now living with the results of her surgery.
That was the beginning of the end for me.
For weeks afterward I found myself fighting off fears of being reported to the licensing board for not agreeing with her and realized, finally, that the whole profession had become a political platform. Therapy had become a form of indoctrination and if you werent goose-stepping with whatever was trending, you were truly risking everything.
This is honestly a great loss for everyone because social work had so much promise in its beginnings.

Where I work they are changing from HR to "People Ops". Apparently that is the BS name change of the month.
If I ran a company that department will be known as Personell. They would handle paychecks, retirement accounts, medical insurance and paperwork for new and soon to be former employees. Anyone in the department who brings up the touchy-feely stuff will be immediately sent to the "soon to be former employee" desk.
I was born in 1951. I must have been ten years old when I heard dad and his buddies in Ithaca, NY railing against lunatic psychiatrists. I don’t remember the context of their discussion, but their opinion of head shrinkers stuck with me.
LOLOLOL!!!!
Go shopping with Kohl’s 30% off coupon works for me and 70% of my pocketbook!!!
Nothing changes till the money stops.
How do we get it to stop?
Your statement to beware of therapy, unless it’s Christian based reminds me of a MSW (Social Worker/Marriage Counselor)in our little locale. She was single, but was the town bicycle, if you get the drift. I always found it hilarious that she was giving counseling to others on how to improve/save their marriages, while at the same time sleeping with half the male population of a mid-sized town, including the male of the couple who came to her for her “services”. Now with all the Jerry Falwell, Jr.’s around, I’m not so certain about counselling from charlatans who claim religious affiliations. Might be best to use your own morals and judgment (that is, if you were blessed by parents who passed them along to you, and YOU were intelligent enough to heed their teachings).
.....and insanity.
Everyday brings something else sickening and disgraceful by the left. There is no bottom for them as they dig to hell.
What we are handing our children is criminal.
That is one reason socialism inevitably leads to societal collapse. Once the universities and then major businesses are taken over by leftists the focus moves from technology to politics. And politics never kept a generator running, or developed an innovative new industry.
China has avoided this problem by importing vast amounts of technology and ignoring the Marxist ideas their revolution started with. They kept the one-party elite rule and the tyranny of the state against individuals but run the rest of the nation like a capitalist economy.
The fools in our universities today are wasting the opportunity to really improve the world instead of chasing after political ideas.
New tagline
Yeah... another clue was when the Personnel Department became Human Resources, right up there with non biologicals....soylent green.
At the last company I worked for before retiring, HR invited the entire company to come to a milk and cookies social one afternoon. Milk and cookies — sounds odd, doesn’t it?
It was “Harvey Milk Day.” (he was the murdered homo supe in San Fran).
That was over the top and I was glad to leave not long after that.
Who was a big fanboi, if not actual homo lover, of the Reverend Jim Jones.
No, because we are too far from God any more.
Did you mean:
China has avoided this problem by stealing vast amounts of technology?
Socialism and communism are founded on theft. Steal from the people who create wealth, and give to the people who destroy wealth, "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need..."
This is a bigger problem than can be solved by electing conservative politicians.
We get the schools back or we're finished.
That HR lady that could spot a troublemaker, was one in a million.
HR gets paid by the company, so they are -—not— your friend, in spite of all the platitudes.
yes, but the State, with massive amounts of printed money and debt and spending, empowers those factions, and keeps society (for the time-being anyway) from facing the consequences of its illogical and immoral choices.
That will make the chastisement even worse when it comes.
I can remember when the department was called “personnel”.
When it was changed to “human resources”, is when things went to h3ll.
I have often wondered if there are engineers who could now build what the engineers of the 20s-60s once did. I truly doubt it except for those in the nuclear field dealing with all the dangers of that.
Actually no. I am well aware that businesses in China and elsewhere around the world steal a lot of intellectual property. But a far greater amount of technology was willfully transferred to Chinese businesses in return for money or other benefits. Many people try to portray China's success as being solely as a result of stealing technology, but that is just a cover story for the people who sold or gave the majority of the technology to them.
When US business owners and venture capital investors sold entire factories full of equipment along with the tooling, customer lists, and patent portfolios to Chinese businessmen that wasn't "stealing" it was a stupid policy based on short term profit over the longer term needs of our nation.
When Microsoft, Boeing, Apple, GE, and many others partnered with Chinese businesses and the Chinese government that wasn't "stealing" it was a shortsighted strategy driven by profit seeking corporate managers.
