Pelosi rejects idea of voting Saturday to extend unemployment insurance

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday rejected a push by some House Democrats to vote this weekend on extending federal unemployment insurance payments that expired at the end of July, maintaining that it could undermine negotiations on other aspects of a coronavirus relief package.

More than 100 Democrats this week signed on to a letter spearheaded by Reps. Scott Peters (Calif.), Derek Kilmer (Wash.) and Don Beyer (Va.) that urged leadership to schedule a vote for Saturday on legislation to extend enhanced unemployment insurance on a time frame based on econometrics.

Pelosi said that she personally supports the idea of tying unemployment insurance payments to economic measures like the unemployment rate instead of allowing the benefits to expire on arbitrary dates. But she argued that voting on such a proposal at this stage could ultimately backfire in coronavirus relief negotiations.

"That's a very positive initiative. I have encouraged that, I have welcomed that suggestion," Pelosi said during an interview on "PBS NewsHour."

"I don't think strategically it's where we should go right now, because the Republicans would like to pass something like that and say forget about it," Pelosi continued. "Forget about state and local [government funding], forget about our investments in stopping the virus, forget about other initiatives that feed the food insecure children in our country, vote by mail initiatives and the rest."

Pelosi also warned that if the House were to pass a standalone bill to extend unemployment insurance, Senate Republicans could amend it and add "poison pills."

"I don't think it's done by giving them an out," Pelosi said of reaching a coronavirus aid deal with Republicans. "I think it's done by making them come into the negotiation."...

Saw it. Great news. The rat states on east coast are not taking care of their people.

the average salary is from the 1970s make me laugh

Housing is priced accordingly. That's good for middle class folks. It is also good for NYers who decide to cash out and retire in Florida.

NINE out of TEN top states that take more than they give is you rednecks

That was a political decision made decades ago, largely by northern Democrats to buy southern Democrat votes (back when there were white southern Democrats in large numbers). That is covered thoroughly in the book "What's Wrong with Kansas"?

I am in Arizona these days, but the conservative southern and mountain red states would be happy to keep the Fed $$$ out if we get to keep God, guns, babies, and stop celebrating perversion. We would also happily lose the strings tre tied to fed $$$.

Do a discharge petition and see how she likes it.

Wow - stock market at record high, now 30+ states have accepted Trump’s FEMA emergency employee unemployment assistance

CNBC said only 11 have so far, with citizens in only 4 of those states receiving any money so far. Others are "exploring" it.

Those states that you belittle, have good patriotic citizens who. for the most part, ask very little from the federal government, cause very little disruption in their “hillbilly” enclaves and are peopled with most who are courteous and caring for one another.

I don’t happen to live in one of those Mayberry states, but I sure admire the residents...for the most part.

Having lived at one time reasonably close to NY and visited frequently, the ONLY thing I found worthwhile in the city was Little Italy.

That’s not saying much. And of course, this is just my redneck opinion.

“No one wants to say this, but if on January 20th they are still futzing with the mail in ballots, Pelosi becomes President. “

That is not correct. As the law is currently written, all states must certify the votes for President by the first week in December, and the all of the voting in the Electoral college must be done on December 14th. Any state that cannot complete counting the votes in time to certify the results and cast their electoral votes will not have their votes counted by Congress. The only way to change that would be for Congress to change the law and for the President to sign it. The Constitution requires the winner to receive a majority of all possible electoral votes, so
or if neither candidate received 270 ECs due to some states missing the deadline, the president would be elected by the House and the VP would be elected by the Senate. In the House, each state would get 1 vote and there are currently more states with a majority GOP delegation than states with majority Dem delegation.

That sounds very familiar but I don’t remember what a discharge petition is or what its impact would actually be if it was to happen. Could you perhaps explain it to several of us here?

I like that she publicly admits holding the UI payments hostage to her ideological agenda. President Trump should have plenty of material to use in election commercials after the past month or so.

George Carlin was a master wordsmith.

Great comics and comedians (especially of old) knew the subject(s) they were poking their spears into well enough to be able to extract humor from an otherwise humorless situation or person.

But from all that knowledge landed a modicum of belief system that stays with the comic.

Carlin was brilliant because he really was atheist and non conservative, which played to a much larger and younger American audience than not.

Now, I cannot remember a hint of you, dp0622, of being so hateful towards perhaps 2/3 of American culture, so I'm going to assume the above diatribe is an attempt at humor.

However, by so doing, you identify yourself as part of the "landed" population and I will personally critique your subsequent replies here in FR.

We're all getting older and must protect ourselves from creeping Bidenism ....

Nancy is a lying snake, sugar-coating cynical maneuvers like vote by mail as if it were compassionate.

If 218 members sign a discharge petition, the bill comes to the floor for a vote.

In other words, I don’t care if people lose their houses and can’t pay their bills. I have my own objectives to worry about.

Government exists to serve the needs of government.

If people start to realize this, we’d have a lot less government.

The stench to surrounds the godless, vile, demonic Botoxian reeks. It rivals the stench of stale urine and rotten cabbage that surround the PIAPS. This demon will do NOTHING to assist Americans....nothing. This one, Lil Ruthie and Nadless are all prime candidates for the Reaper’s harvest. It can’t happen soon enough.
