NEW YORK (WHEC) -- Unemployed New Yorkers who were hoping to get the additional weekly benefits President Donald Trump promised a few weeks ago, are out of luck. The State of New York has to request the money to fund those payments from FEMA and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday, he will not be doing that.
Under the last stimulus package, the Federal Government was providing $600 weekly payments, on top of state benefits, to those who are out of work during the pandemic.
The payments ended at the end of July and when lawmakers in Washington couldn't reach a deal to extend them, President Trump stepped in with an executive order that would provide $400 per week instead. The catch? States have to pay 25% ($100/week) of it.
'You cannot get water out of a stone, that is a fact and we have a $14 billion dollar deficit, and we can't pay for it,' Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
The estimated cost to New York State is $4.2 billion.
But FEMA has since clarified that it will allow states to count the existing unemployment payments they're making toward the 25% share, meaning if a state signs up, unemployed workers could still get a $300 weekly payment.
Jennifer Lewke (News10NBC): 'Under that plan, there'd be no additional cost for New York in order to offer the unemployed the $300, will you apply for that FEMA money to fund those payments?'
Gov. Andrew Cuomo: 'I don't know what the feds most recent decision is, I don't know that any of it is legal. I don't believe the whole executive order mechanism is legal. So, I think this is all an artificial construction for political reasons.'
Gov. Cuomo says even if he thought the President's order was legal, it requires too much leg-work...

It costs NY nothing. The 100 was revised. It is now covered if the state is providing 100 of regular unemployment. He is hurting New Yorkers. His leadership killed the elderly, caused business to close, and now depriving unemployed New Yorkers of 300 a week.
As long as New Yorkers are willing to put up with little dictators like Cumholo and de Blowsthehole I have no sympathy for them.
Nothing like a Communist Democrat trying to force productive (non-Democrat) states to subsidize them. Forget 25%; they need to pay 100% and then pay back all the damage they've done to other states.
If I was in New York and unemployed, I’d be pretty mad at the dems right now.
Ok — then NY is stupid to turn this down. However, even for those states that are approved, it looks like the date when checks can go out is mainly TBD with the earliest being Arizona in late September. I still think this game of political chicken can backfire pretty badly and there will be egg on every one’s face. This is not a winning issue for Republicans or Democrats. Hope sanity prevails soon.
See Post #24...however,the Rats surely believe that it’s Trump that voters will blame rather than them. And in many cases they’d be correct.
New York City is dead meat
The rest of the state is rejoicing
Upstate New Yorkers living in any town anywhere near the Adirondacks or the western region even Westchester hate New York City more than anybody else
Why’s he running his pie hole? Did he run out of old folks to kill?
No, only the federal government can write checks without the funds to back it up.
States have to balance their budgets.
So, I think this is all an artificial construction for political reasons.’
Gov. Cuomo says even if he thought the President’s order was legal, it requires too much leg-work...
So your alibi is it’s political expediency on the one hand, which you wont support and on the other hand you overtly admit that it’s too much work to get needed monies, WHICH ARE AVAILABLE?
LOL
I guess you and governor newsome got the call from Nancy that they are absolutely going to vote to extend $600 a week
I hope you’re right for the sake of my fellow Americans
I hope you’re wrong for the sake of 2024
What was the other state?
Thanks
The fewer the merrier. Take out New York and California with their big populations and there is more for everyone else.
Yes, simple math wins for our side as the blue governors continue to $crew their voters.
“this idiot told the restaurants that he will probably close them up in the fall. This guy needs to be Mussolinid”
If he $crews the mafia restaurant owners, he could be on borrowed time.
SD - but for reasons not reported in media. They said they didnt lock down for COVID, and now the virus has already run thru the state, and theyre open for business; so they dont need extended unemployment benefits
Arizonas max unemployment is $240/week, the second lowest in the nation. However, our minimum is something like $190/week, the second highest in the nation. Therefore, we are receiving over $100 minimum so we qualify for the extra $300. Some states pay a lot more max but only pay like $20 minimum, so theyre screwed when it comes to this latest federal assistance program.
240 is so low! Never heard of a 20 minimum certainly not in N.Y.. I think our max is about 500.
Actually, Im in Arizona and hubby and I both received the extra $300 just the other day. Were still waiting for the backpay from the weeks ending August 1st and 8th, but DES says we should receive it by the end of August.
Cuomo just being an asshat. Same with Schumer.
That’s great. So it does work. Meanwhile, Andy faking ignorance.
I read the other day that Hawaii gives a minimum of $5/week. Seriously??!!?
