I shook Hubert Humphrey’s hand once. He came to FSU when I was in college and he was walking along the street shaking hands with students. He was a short chubby guy. I was a Poly Sci major and it was quite a thrill even though I disagreed with his politics. Today he would be a Republican.
I’m inclined to think no. The party moving left would have given him cover to move left also.
Robert Bork and Clarence Pendleton pointed out that he promised to eat the Civil Rights Act if it were ever used to justify quotas. He lived to see the day that it was but did not eat the Act. When bureaucrats and judges handed him a victory that he didn’t have to negotiate for, he saw no need to renegotiate the deal.
