People across the Bay Area woke to a wild mix of thunder, lightning, high winds and heavy rain early Sunday morning, as thunderstorms moved across the region before sunrise.
Dry lightning was in the forecast, but the thunderstorms were more severe and wet than expected and, at the end of a week marked by dry heat, the weather was a surprise for many. The weather was also unusual for California, which sees little storm activity in the summer months.
Hundreds of lightning strikes were recorded, National Weather Service forecaster Drew Peterson said at 5 a.m. "Were seeing nonstop continuous lightning across the Bay Area, especially the west side, not as much on the east side," he said.

SF must have made Dick Cheney mad
Uh, Florida state income tax rate is the same as NevaDUHs. As for the storms, we could certainly use a ton of rain in the Reno area about now. No lightning please. YUGE fire about 8-12 miles west of us and moving this way.
Live a few hundred miles north and the clouds this AM look beautiful a welcome relief from the 90’s and 100’s.
But those clouds will have lightening and start the fires and good old Newsom/PG&E will start the rolling black outs and declare clouds an enemy of the state that spread the W-U-H-A-N* from Chinahhh.* Stay inside for the greater good.
Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
ZOT!
LightninNado.
I see what you did there.
I bet a large percentage of those who are experiencing this say to themselves “this is Trump’s fault.”
“Uh, Florida state income tax rate is the same as NevaDUHs. “
Nevada’s rate is 2x that of Florida.
Yes because of climate change or sumthin’.
Well there for sure was a ‘firenado’ yesterday with the Loyalton fire just across the state line from us. Can’t find the pic but someone reported it yesterday on FR.
Lightening and hot/dry weather don’t mix!
I’m here in the Martinez, CA and I woke up to lightening and thunder at 5 am. It is now 9:45am and we are still getting lightening and thunder with slight rain and of course, small brush fires. I think God is sick of California.
Sure woke me up. I felt like I was back in Arizona.
I’m waiting for someone to post a pic of the lightning storm from the Tom Cruise version of “The War of the Worlds.”
Wow! Nonstop AND continuous.
Yup. That's much worse than sporadic nonstop lightning and nearly as bad as incessant nonstop continuous lightning.
Fire and brimstone next
