Chicago Alderman says businesses leaving Magnificent Mile
American Wire ^ | August 13, 2020 | Josh Wilson

Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile, a major shopping district in the city’s downtown, may be losing some of its longtime tenants. Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez said the situation in Chicago is pretty sad at this point.

“We’re seeing a lot of the same mistakes from the end of May being re-performed again following this past weekend’s looting,” Lopez said.

Lopez says that downtown Chicago has always been a major hub for business and a frequent place to visit by tourists. Now he fears that might no longer be the case.

“The fear is spreading, the anxiety is spreading and we’re seeing individuals who used to see the downtown areas, like the crown jewel of our city, now wanting to leave, people who live there wanting to re-evaluate their choice in housing options and stores who were just starting to get past the main riots and looting thinking that they may not stay on the Magnificent Mile anymore,” he said.

Chicago has been front and center during the nationwide protests and riots. President Donald Trump has been a vocal critic of the city’s leadership for failing to control crime. On Sunday, downtown Chicago was overrun by looters with many high-end retailers being vandalized.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown held a press conference earlier this week to address the situation.

“Criminals took to the streets with a confidence that there would be no consequences for their actions and I, for one, refuse to allow these cowardly acts to hold our city hostage,” Brown said. “CPD will not stand by as our beautiful downtown becomes someplace that people fear.”

Lopez says that a number of elected officials want repercussions and accountability but they are outnumbered by leaders like Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“The problem is that our law enforcement, our mayor, and our state’s attorney have not been on the same page when it comes to the adjudication of justice in Chicago,” Lopez said. “The fact that State’s Attorney Kim Foxx is delusional in thinking that criminals who see no repercussions will be stopped simply because an activity is illegal shows how out of touch she is.”

Even the Ronald McDonald House wasn’t safe from the looters on Sunday.

“SAD & UNACCEPTABLE: The Ronald McDonald House in Chicago was vandalized during looting early Monday morning while families & their sick children huddled inside. The liberal mayor must control her streets,” tweeted White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

The president this week addressed the continued violence in Chicago and other major U.S. cities. He again called on local leaders to step up enforcement.

“The mayors and governors of these states and cities have an absolute duty to use all resources necessary to end the violence and all of the injury and death,” said Trump.

My wife and I would go on great 3 day weekends to Chicago, we’d stay at the best hotels, eat at as many great restaurants we could get to, shop and see the sights. But no more. Sorry Chicago, we will miss you a great deal.

All the businesses need to go and leave the city in ruins. Unfortunately, the democrats who caused that will just beg for money from the state and the feds.

I grew up just outside Chicago many years ago. If you told me then that the only one speaking up for the city would be Hispanic, I would have laughed.

“I don’t think whites are really wanted there any more.”

They’re not. But their money is.

Chicago would be thrilled if all the whites just abandoned their homes and businesses and assets and left. Almost a century of one-party (Dem, of course) control has left its legacy. Chicago cannot be saved, simply because its citizens will never do what is necessary to save it. Chicago will become Detroit in 6 - 8 years.

“She’s planning on selling Midway Airport. Seriously.”

That idea has been floated around for years. I remember Midway from before the renovation. It was rather “third-worldy” back then.

“Back in the late 60’s, Detroit was one of the greatest cities in America and it has never fully recovered from the great exodus that took place.”

Yeah, I think it went from a population of 1.5 million down to something like 500,000.

Yeah. I worked in the trade show industry for a number of years. The revenue that came into town from travelers to attend conventions at McCormick was mind numbing.

Millions of people flying in, eating at local restaurants, staying in local hotels, shopping. Many from attendees being from the medical/pharmaceutical profession where there is no lack of money.

That’s not even taking into account all of the union folks in the hall that relied on conventions for their jobs.

Chicago may surpass Detroit for biggest smoking hole in the US by the time this is over.

“That election and the immigration reform law of 1965 fundamentally changed America forever. Those changes, whether it is politically correct to note it or not, have led directly to the dissolution of Chicago and elsewhere. America is no loner united by a consensus of commonly held decent values.”

That was the start, but the fatal blow was 1973, with Roe v. Wade: A society that will happily normalize and make legal the murder of the most innocent and helpless amongst it is capable of any atrocity, and will “not long endure.”

I have family that lives in the area, but they are fairly far west from Chicago itself. Algonquin and west of there.

The new Detroit...

You took the words out of my brain.

The scale of Chicago is considerably larger that that of 1950s Detroit. But, still possible.

That is just a fantastic point.

I often think that for all her good ideas, Ayn Rand did a terrible disservice to her cause with the fanciful Galt's Gulch, and the idea of letting things fall completely apart so we can quickly rebuild.

Reality does not work that way. People should be aware that letting things go completely will likely lead to a very long and dark road, and the end of that road is far from certain. At the very least, the misery along the way will be incalculable.

In other news, suburban shopping malls are starting to see an uptick in tenants...

Not if public transit runs anywhere near them.

Long ago the shoplifters figured out how to get to suburban malls to ply their trade. Looters will not be far behind.
